The Basics
The outpatient substance abuse treatment at Boise, Idaho’s Intermountain Hospital are available to those who have completed the detox and inpatient programs or clients who do not require the 24-hour care involved in a hospital stay. There is a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) that each meet several days a week. These programs include group and individual therapy and the frequency and duration are individualized to match the client’s specific needs.
Treatment and Staff
The goal of the PHP and IOP at Intermountain Hospital is to reintroduce participants into their communities as seamlessly as possible after inpatient treatment. Clients attend treatment between three and five days a week for about five hours a day. These days consists of group therapy sessions that focus on psychoeducation and relapse prevention.
There are a variety of different therapeutic methods used in the programs and during the weekly individual therapy sessions. Therapists help clients focus on their personal needs and specific goals. Evidence based modalities, like CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI), DBT and Rational Emotive Behavioral Therapy (REBT) are common methods employed. Intermountain clients who also benefit from medication management due to a co-occurring disorder have weekly visits from a staff psychiatrist who monitors their progress. Clients are also encouraged to attend frequent AA or NA meetings within their community, and focus on physical health as well as emotional wellness.
There is a large staff that interacts with their clients on a daily basis, and the clinical team includes Master’s-level therapists and medical staff, including RNs and CADCs.
Extras
Transportation is provided for each client to and from the facility, and breakfast and lunch are offered on a daily basis.
Clients and their family members or spouses are welcome to attend family or couples therapy even after the client has completed treatment. The staff offers referral services for additional treatments, or if relapse occurs.
In Summary
Intermountain Hospital is a big facility that employs staff with many years experience regarding mental health and substance abuse. There isn’t one and only way to approach treatment and this facility acknowledges that people’s experience with addiction is very personal. There is no easy way to get and stay clean, but this facility at least offers many different therapeutic avenues.
