The Basics
In 1971, the state of Georgia created Unison Behavioral Health to provide mental health care, substance abuse treatment and services for those with developmental disabilities to the residents of eight counties in southeast Georgia. Serving Coffee, Atkinson, Bacon, Pierce, Ware, Clinch, Charlton and Brantley Counties, Unison Behavioral Health is a comprehensive network of care. Until 2012, Georgia’s Unison Behavioral Health was known as Satilla Community Services, and though they share a name, this organization is not affiliated with Unison Behavioral Health Group of Ohio.
Unison offers a long-term residential treatment for women and their children at its Garden Gate Residential Treatment Center and a co-ed 30-day residential program at the St. Illa facility, both located in the city of Waycross. St. Illa has been in operation since 1990. Additionally, Unison provides outpatient substance abuse services in each of its eight locations.
Accommodations and Food
St. Illa residents are housed in a treatment facility near the Ware/Waycross Airport. The facility also has a 16-bed crisis stabilization unit that also provides detox services, which can last from two to 10 days.
The residential unit accommodates up to 26 residents with space for 16 men and 10 women all housed in separate gender-specific areas of the facility. All residents have roommates and share bathrooms. For recreation, clients may take walks or play volleyball on the facility’s court. Residents are not permitted cell phones or computers, but they can use the facility’s computer lab under supervision.
St. Illa’s kitchen staff prepares all meals, and food allergies and special diets can be accommodated. Residents also cycle through chore assignments during their 30 days.
Treatment and Staff
Upon admission, residents are given a treatment plan that includes daily group therapy. Residents must attend at least 25 hours of treatment activities each week with at least one individual therapy session each week. In the evenings, residents can take walks, relax in the common areas and complete assignments from their group therapy curricula.
The treatment team at Unison includes MSWs, LCSWs, LPCs and CADCs who use CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI) in treatment.
If therapy groups exceed 15 participants, a co-facilitator will be added to keep a low staff-to-client ratio. Clients with co-occurring disorders can receive therapy and medication management for their mental health diagnosis from an on-site psychiatrist. Unison endorses the 12-step framework for clients but meeting attendance is not required during their stay. All treatment at St. Illa is gender-specific and residents do not socialize with members of the opposite sex.
Extras
Once a client has stabilized, they may receive family visits if their treatment team approves. Many of St. Illa’s residents attend one of Unison’s eight outpatient programs for aftercare.
In Summary
For over 25 years, Unison Behavioral Health’s St. Illa Residential Treatment Center has provided the residents of southeast Georgia with gender-specific inpatient treatment. With an on-site detox unit and psychiatric services, residential treatment at St. Illa can create a solid foundation in recovery for those with even the most serious and complex addictions.
