The Basics
Therapy in Motion is a family run, residential substance abuse treatment facility located outside the city of Pocatello in Lava Hot Springs, Idaho. It was founded in 2014 by Jack Fleming, a recovering addict and LCSW and offers affordable, individualized, evidence-based therapy approaches. Treatment is available to just ten clients at a time who are 18 and older, and lead by a small staff so as to provide a very personalized experience with positive results.
Accommodations and Food
The residence accommodates up for six men and four women in a cozy home-style facility, and though the men and women’s sides are adjacent, the genders are separated during the treatment process. The bedrooms are shared, dorm-style, with full bathrooms. There is a kitchen, dining room, herb garden and back patios for relaxing during down time on both the men and women’s side. Both sides have laundry rooms and living rooms with televisions where house movie nights are held. Smoking is permitted in specific areas around the facility at designated times, and during personal times clients can work out in the garage gym for 30 minutes a day, or hang out with other clients playing board games, cards, or foosball.
Nutritious meal options are provided and the food is prepared by the clients. Individuals may also bring in their own favorite snacks or treats, but are limited in the amount they can keep at the residence.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment ranges from 30 to 90 days and the clients experience a structured therapeutic schedule. A typical day would include two or three group sessions or psychoeducation classes, an individual session, on-site 12-step meetings, exercise, community outreach or volunteering and a small amount of personal down time.
Treatment is individualized to every client’s specific needs and includes both relapse prevention and aftercare plans, as well as coping and life skills training. Therapy approaches include various evidence-based methods, like CBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI), and the Stages of Change model. Recreational therapeutic activities, such as trips to the local hot springs offer an opportunity for adventure therapy and group bonding.
There is a small staff at Therapy in Motion of about seven, which consists of the founder of the facility, Jack, and his wife Susan, who is the executive director. Other clinical staff includes CADCs, an LPC and Champ, a certified therapy dog.
Extras
Health and fitness are emphasized and incorporated into treatment. Yoga classes and guided meditations are each offered once a week on-site. Couples and family counseling services are also available.
In Summary
This hands on, not for profit facility offers holistic and client-centered treatment in a serene setting. A major bonus is that it doesn’t cost an arm and a leg. Therapy in Motion believes in structure and substance abuse education to create a lasting change as opposed to just taking a vacation from addiction.
