The Basics

Since 2010, the Townsend Recovery Center in Scott, Louisiana, has been offering detox and residential substance abuse treatment. Townsend also operates seven outpatient treatment facilities throughout the state in Baton Rouge, Covington, Houma, Lafayette, Lake Charles, Metairie and New Orleans. It was recently acquired by American Addiction Centers, on April 1st, 2016.

Accommodations and Food

Townsend runs its residential program in a quiet setting, out of two older houses in the Scott countryside. The program provides a total of 20 beds. Clients share rooms, between two to six people of the same sex, per room. Townsend promotes a family style, tight-knit community amongst clients.

All meals are included in the cost of stay. The Townsend staff cooks breakfast, lunch and dinner, while client have access to snacks throughout the day. There is a soda machine on campus which charges $1 per can.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment at Townsend may start with medically-monitored detox, in a non-clinical setting. Post detox, Townsend staff and clients work together to create individualized treatment plans for each person. Townsend provides dual-diagnosis support for co-occurring disorders, as well as travel assistance. A Townsend stay may last between 28 to 35 days, with most clients completing 30. While at Townsend, clients take part in group and individual sessions at a ratio determined by their individualized program. The facility utilizes a 12-step approach as well as other modalities, including CBT and DBT.

A typical day at Townsend includes breakfast, meditation, group until lunch, then again until 5 pm, followed by free time for homework and reflection. Clients may go to an outside AA/NA meeting in the evening before returning for bedtime. In order to attend off-site meetings, Townsend clients must be connected to a sponsor.

The Townsend team includes a medical director who is a psychiatrist and LADCs. There is a 24/7 nursing staff at the homes and an MD monitors clients’ during the detox process.

Extras

There are exercise facilities available at the Townsend residential location which include a pool, volleyball court and a fishing pond. Additionally, clients have access to aerobics classes six days a week, as well as water aerobics at the Townsend exercise facilities.

The detox and residential care at Townsend Recovery Center is well-organized and the outpatient locations offer clients from all over the option to continue their care from home after they leave treatment.
