inexpensive rehabs in hood river oregonThe Basics

The Next Door in Hood River, Oregon is located about an hour east of Portland. Founded in 1971 in a big farmhouse, the program has since expanded into an outpatient addiction treatment and foster care placement program for teenage boys and girls. The organization also runs an alternative school, Klahre House, which clients attend while in treatment. Programs are only to court-ordered clientele.

Accommodations and Food

Because clients are adolescent and processed through the judicial system, accommodations for treatment are somewhat unusual. Upon intake, clients are placed into a network of foster family homes in the community that are overseen and regulated by The Next Door. For this reason, food and specific accommodations vary, but all are guaranteed three meals a day; with breakfast and lunch served at the facility during day treatment. There are between 14 to 30 adolescents in the program at any given time.

Treatment and Staff

The day treatment program consists primarily of group therapy using evidence-based practices such as Motivational Interviewing (MI), Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) and CBT. Additional sessions geared towards reversing aggression and criminal thinking are also offered. Gender-specific care is also included. Other topics include social skill development, peer mediation and emotional processing. Though active 12-step recovery is not central to the program, mentors from local groups sometimes take clients to AA/NA meetings.

In addition to addiction treatment, clients concurrently attend Klahre House to keep up with their academics. Classes are made up of five to eight students at a time. The school is run on a democratic model with the students helping to design the curriculum and what projects they work on. Staff includes CADCs, Master’s-level therapists, case managers, certified teachers and a psychiatrist who sees clients for medication management. The ratio of case managers to students is one-to-six.

Extras

Because The Next Door provides so many comprehensive services for at-risk youth, those interested in fostering recovering teens can be trained and supported through the organization. It also has a crisis shelter that serves as temporary living arrangements for homeless teens. Its community attention homes is where clients can stay at for 90 days before placement in a foster home. These programs include assessments and mental health services as well.

In Summary

Overall, The Next Door program offers comprehensive care when it comes to adolescent treatment services. Clients can expect a full continuum of care that includes housing, treatment and alternative schooling. Treatment employs evidence-based practices as well as 12-step support, all with a number of partnerships with other local outreach organizations. For those in need, The Next Door is a valuable resource on the road to recovery.
