The Basics
For over 45 years the Southwestern Pennsylvania Human Services, Inc. has been providing the residents of Fayette, Greene, Washington and Westmoreland Counties with behavioral health services in the state of Pennsylvania. It offers treatment for mental health, substance abuse, pediatric health care and family support services to over 50,000 residents annually. Its clinic in Monessen, a small city in Westmoreland County, provides outpatient substance abuse treatment.
Treatment and Staff
After an assessment, clients are enrolled in either the standard outpatient or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Clients in standard outpatient attend group therapy once or twice a week and individual therapy as-needed. Clients in the IOP attend group therapy three times each week and individual therapy once a week. The duration of each treatment plan is progress-based, depending on the needs and participation of each client, with an average stay of three months.
Therapy groups at SPHS usually have 10 participants and are led by Master’s-level therapists such as LPCs, LSWs and psychologists. Therapy uses CBT and clients are encouraged to attend 12-step meetings outside of treatment. The treatment team is able to treat co-occurring disorders and can refer clients to SPHS’s behavioral health departments if their mental health condition warrants more intensive treatment and/or medication.
Extras
Family members can attend a client’s individual therapy if the clients and therapist believe their participation would be beneficial. SPHS can also provide case-management services to clients who need help coordinating care and accessing other community agencies.
In Summary
Southwestern Pennsylvania Human Services, Inc. has been providing mental health, substance abuse treatment and family support services for over 45 years. Its deep roots in the community and ability to provide case-management services might make its outpatient program an especially good choice for those who need supportive programs and additional resources in order to fully participate in their recovery.
