Human Service Center

The Basics

Founded in 1975, Human Service Center is designed to meet the mental and behavioral health needs of Southern Illinois, with locations in Chester, Okawville, Red Bud and Sparta. It offers a wide range of services including outpatient alcohol and drug treatment, psychiatric services, social work and more.

Treatment and Staff

Before treatment begins, clients undergo a 15-minute initial assessment, either in person or on the phone so that an individualized treatment plan can be devised. Using a multi-disciplinary approach, treatment is comprised of individual and group therapy by way of evidence-based practices such as CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Though clients are welcome to attend 12-step meetings on their own time, it is not a requirement of the program. Support for co-occurring disorders is available and clients with DUIs can get state-approved treatment in line with state and judicial guidelines.

Staff includes psychiatrists, psychiatric nurses, CADCs, LCPCs, LCSWs and other Master’s-level counselors.

Extras

Human Service Center also offers two residential treatment programs for developmentally disabled and mentally ill adults. It also offers developmental training and other programs geared towards self-sufficiency.

The Children First program, a special counseling track for families in the divorce and post-divorce process, serves as a resource for parents to guide their kids through this traumatic time. Other services include tele-psychiatric counseling for children, marital counseling and a 24/7 emergency and a crisis hotline.
