Emmorton PsychThe Basics

Founded over 17 years ago in the Baltimore suburb of Abingdon, Maryland, Emmorton Psychology, known as Emmorton Psych offers outpatient treatment for clients struggling with chemical dependency and co-occurring disorders. While their Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is not currently in operation, the rehab offers does offer individual therapy and a weekly relapse prevention group.

Treatment and Staff

Prior to admission, an in-person assessment with a counselor must be completed. Clients receive individualized treatment plans. Emmorton Psych doesn’t provide detox, and clients requiring that or medication-assisted treatment are provided with referrals.

Those requiring dual diagnosis support undergo a complete psychological evaluation that includes a variety of psychological tests. Individual therapy is the primary protocol used for the treatment of co-occurring disorders, and clients typically meet with their therapists weekly or more often, depending on their specific needs. Individual therapy covers topics such as trauma, stress management, parenting, substance abuse and addiction, co-dependency, depression, anxiety and eating disorders.

The Emmorton Psych relapse prevention program lasts 26 weeks. The co-ed groups meet once a week from 6 pm to 7:30 pm Mondays or Tuesdays. Besides relapse prevention, these groups use evidence-based methods such as CBT to address topics include warning signs, life skills, stress management, aftercare, personal triggers and sober recreation. Group therapy typically ranges about ten clients per session. While Emmorton Psych doesn’t technically use a 12-step approach, clients are encouraged to attend outside meetings. Random, as well as court-ordered drug and alcohol screenings are conducted regularly.

Staff includes two Master’s-level counselors, a Master’s-level CSW, a CADC, a LCDC, a Bachelor’s-level certified associate alcohol and drug counselor, office support, two psychologists and a psychology associate. The cost for an evaluation for the outpatient program is $75. Group costs $35 per session. A mental health evaluation costs $100, and each individual session is $65.

Extras

Emmorton Psych offers a state-certified DUI education curriculum. Groups meet both during the day and in the evenings. Topics include legal issues, drinking and driving, drugs of abuse, social drinking and problem drinking.

In Summary

Although they seem to have scaled back their substance abuse treatment lately, clients seeking individual therapy for co-occurring disorders, as well as other mental health issues, will find comprehensive services at Emmorton Psych. The staff boasts impressive credentials. However, for those whoa re serious about recovery from chemical dependency issues, this level of care may be best when supplemented by rigorous participation in self-help groups.
