The Basics

The Pine Street Counseling Services of Howard Center in Burlington, Vermont, is an outpatient substance abuse treatment facility that mainly serves adult clients with co-occurring disorders. Treatment is based on evidence-based practices.

Treatment and Staff

Clients coming to the Pine Street facility are typically self-referred, though some clients are recommended after receiving a DUI, and undergo an initial assessment with an intake counselor to determine the level of care that they need. The treatment is individualized and the client can attend group or individual therapy sessions up to three times a week. Treatment approach incorporates CBT, DBT, and behavior modification and Motivational Interviewing (MI). For those with a dual diagnosis there are medication management services offered as well.

Specialty therapy groups may focus on trauma-related symptoms or clients who may have experienced PTSD. The group sessions are a mix of men and women and are kept fairly small in size, usually under 12. Relapse prevention, anger management, and job skills training are also integrated into programming. Some clients will also be introduced to the 12 steps while participating in treatment at Pine Street as an additional form of support.

The staff at Howard Center has extensive training and experience working with clients who have both mental health and addiction, with accreditations like LADC, Master’s-level mental health counselor and LPC.

Referrals to additional programs at Howard Center, like medical exams, criminal justice assistance, housing assistance or job placement services. The Howard Center provides bi-lingual counseling services.

In Summary

In 2015 the Howard Center released an annual outcomes report regarding their outpatient substance abuse programs. Out of more than 5,000 clients that were served, 92 percent reported that they received the appropriate care they needed and went on to finish school or get jobs in their communities. This kind of number can be attributed to the goals of the facility itself, to be present for each client and treat them with respect and dignity throughout the entire process.
