San Diego CaliforniaThe Basics

Established in 2010 in the upscale neighborhood of Bankers Hill in San Diego, California, Amethyst Landing provides sober living for gay, bisexual, transgender and straight men. Founder Terry Ryusaki is in recovery. He opened Amethyst Landing, after his sponsor, Michael James Sapp, was diagnosed with lymphoma in 2009. He witnessed many people from the local AA community show up to see Sapp in the hospital. He was inspired by the power of the fellowship, and how his sponsor’s selflessness had touched so many lives. Amethyst Landing is dedicated to the memory of Sapp, and there is a plaque commemorating him in the entryway. Besides the single family home, Amethyst Landing recently expanded to include another property, called the Centre for Serenity.

Accommodations and Amenities

Amethyst Landing accommodates six residents in a large house with a private backyard with a hot tub, and a landscaped garden with orange, avocado and tangerine trees, as well as a meditation garden enclosed among tall bamboos. The sunny and spacious interior includes lavender and white walls, amethyst couches and modern furnishings. There is also a custom bathroom with a waterfall feature in the front entryway. At Amethyst Landing, there are single and double-occupancy fully furnished rooms, which include beds, closet, dressers and a 32-inch smart TVs. At Amethyst Landing, clients are responsible for their own groceries, and meals are prepared in fully equipped kitchens. Residents often dine together family-style.

The Centre for Serenity has a 23-bed capacity inside a red brick building. The space has 13 bedrooms and six full bathrooms with granite countertops. There is a spacious kitchen with four state of the art stainless steel refrigerators and an island. Adjacent to the kitchen is a living room with wood floors and black leather  armchairs. Clients are accommodated in private, double or triple-occupancy rooms, which include beds, old fashioned dark wood dressers, a 32 or 40-inch smart TV and a closet. The Centre for Serenity is walking distance to public transportation, and across the street from a grocery store.

Amenities include keyless door locks, cable TV, Wi-Fi, gym, pool table and laundry facilities. Each house also features a flat screen 58 or 70 inch TV in a common area. Residential managers live on the premises. The 30-day cost for a triple is $750, a double is $850 and a private room is $1,000.

Rules and Regulations

Prior to admittance, clients typically have a minimum of 30 days of sobriety. Others with less time are accepted on a case-by-case basis, but Ryusaki looks for clients who want to work on staying clean and sober. All must have completed treatment or undergone detox. Residents must be working on a program of recovery, but there are no dictated rules. In many ways, Amethyst Landing has incorporated some of the qualities that are found in Oxford Houses. The residents hold each other accountable, and provide ample peer support.

Staff prefers that residents attend a lot of 12-step meetings, and if necessary, attend an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). At the Centre for Serenity, residents have started an on-site 12-step meeting. The curfew is midnight, seven days a week. Clients typically check in and out of the house, using a fingerprint time clock, so staff is aware of arrival and departure times. This maintains a sense of accountability. At Amethyst Landing, random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. Residents who relapse are dealt with on a case-by-case basis, but Ryusaki makes sure that they have a safe place to land.

Extras

Amethyst Landing has an alliance with Foundations Recovery, and often receives client referrals. Amethyst Landing is also a member of the San Diego Sober Living Coalition.

Amethyst Landing was named after the violet quartz crystal, which the Ancient Greeks used to protect against drunkenness. Upon arrival, new residents receive a locker key with an amethyst stone.

In Summary

Amethyst Landing and the Centre for Serenity provide a haven for gay, bisexual, transgender and straight men. The focus here is recovery, and the clients are a close-knit group of men, who maintain a strong sense of camaraderie. The houses offer safety, serenity and a chance for men to rebuild their lives.
