Smithville TennessseeThe Basics

Located about an hour east of Nashville in Smithville, Tennessee, Sober Living Services and Omega House provide gender-specific sober living, along with comprehensive transitional care for men and women. Its mission is to nurture sobriety, and allow clients ample opportunities to rebuild their lives, while it focuses on a 12-step, faith-based program. Sober Living Services and Omega House accept criminal justice clients referred by the State of Tennessee’s Re-entry program.

Accommodations and Amenities

Sober Living Services accommodates men in a unique brick building and Omega House is a small white bungalow nicknamed the “White House,” which lodges the women. There is a combined 50-bed capacity. Accommodations vary per residence, but typically clients are housed in double, triple or quadruple-occupancy furnished rooms.

Residents are responsible for their own groceries, and meals are prepared in fully equipped kitchens. Staff assists qualified clients with food stamp and public assistance applications. Smoking is permitted outside in designated areas only. Staff lives on the premises and oversees operations.

Rules and Regulations

Prior to admittance, potential clients must have completed detox and filled out an application, followed by an interview. Upon acceptance, they must pass an alcohol and drug screening. There is a 90-day minimum length of stay, but often clients stay up to a year. Weekly requirements include attending an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) at a local facility like Haven of Hope Christian Counseling or Buffalo Valley, attending 12-step meetings, Bible study or church. During the first nine months, clients accompany staff to church. After that time, they can attend a church of their own choice.

Clients also participate in on-site groups including meditation, Big Book study, life skills training, parenting, healthy boundaries and anger management. Other weekly requirements include being at house meetings, performing household chores and working at least a minimum of 30 hours. Staff assists clients on SSI with finding volunteer work. All residents must sign in and sign out upon entering or leaving the facility.

Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. A zero tolerance policy is enforced, and clients who relapse are immediately evicted from the premises. The curfew is 10 pm seven days a week. Lights out is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays, unless clients are working second or third shifts. Criminal justice clients receive reports, which are provided to their parole or probation officers.

Extras

Other services besides housing include case management, job assistance, inpatient treatment referrals (if necessary) and life skills training. The admission cost is $595, and the 30-day cost after that is $540.

Limited transportation is provided, at an additional weekly $25 cost.

In Summary

Sober Living Services and Omega House offers a comprehensive 12-step and faith-based recovery program, along with supplementary services, for clients seeking a second chance in life.
