Based out of Port Angeles, Washington, True Star Program is an outpatient substance abuse treatment program specializing in working with adolescents. State-certified in 1998, the facility is part of the juvenile and family services department of Clallam County and its youth-focused programs extend to those who have been court-ordered to treatment.

Treatment and Staff

Since the program works directly with local drug courts, clients between the ages of 12 and 17 undergo an initial alcohol and drug assessment. Referrals are available for more intensive inpatient treatment, but those who qualify for basic outpatient care begin phase one of treatment.

Individual program requirements vary depending on court stipulations. True Star operates through a federal grant provided by the state of Washington and SAMSHA, so treatment is mostly limited to Adolescent Community Reinforcement Approach (ACRA) guidelines. This involves a combination of individual, group and family therapy as well as anger management and life skills groups. Though generally not mandatory, outside 12-step participation is encouraged. Basic support for co-occurring disorders is also available.

The staff at True Star includes Washington State-certified Chemical Dependency Professionals (CDPs) and Master’s-level counselors. Though the program meets requirements of state guidelines, all therapists are certified in a range of evidence-based therapies including CBT, DBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI).

Extras

DUI assessments and a Youth at Risk prevention program are also offered here. With ties to the local juvenile justice system, judges sometimes hold adolescents facing sentencing, allowing the facility’s therapists to supervise detention-based intensive treatment services.

True Star also has what is referred to as a “Juvie Clubhouse” which organizes pro-social activities after treatment hours. Activities include video games, movie screenings and barbecues.

In Summary

The True Star Program provides outpatient drug and alcohol treatment for local youth and extends social support within the community as well. Though many of its services are designed for youth who have had brushes with the criminal justice system, self-referred clients are welcome—they may even find the program to work as an early prevention tool as well. For teens and adolescents who are headed for trouble with substance abuse, True Star Program is an valuable local resource to consider.
