The Basics
The James H. Quillen VAMC is a substance abuse treatment facility located in Mountain Home, Tennessee. In 1903, the facility began serving veteran men and women with general health care needs. Within the 41-county area of Tennessee, Virginia and Kentucky, approximately 170,000 veterans are living and utilizing medical services. The VAMC services include Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOC) which provide outpatient care for mental and behavioral concerns including substance abuse treatment.
Treatment and Staff
The James H. Quillen VAMC provides treatment for individuals struggling with substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. All clients must first be screened by intake staff with a bio-psycho-social assessment. Clients requiring medically supervised detox prior to primary treatment are admitted first to the hospital under the care of doctors and a nursing staff. Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is available with Suboxone at the clinic. Once a client has been cleared, they may begin chemical dependency treatment.
All clients are required to be free of active substance use during treatment and drug testing and breathalyzer tests are given at random to ensure abstinence. Clients attend group and individual therapy with groups focusing on topics that are relevant to veteran struggles and to foster fellowship with others facing the same issues. War-related stresses and PTSD are highlighted to help clients work towards total mental, emotional and physical recovery. Additionally, depression, anxiety and anger management issues are also discussed in group settings. Groups are facilitated five days a week, but clients may attend as many as they wish depending on their individualized treatment plans.
Clients attend individual therapy as frequently as needed, but meet with their case manager frequently to ensure they are meeting their unique recovery goals. Resources available to veterans include help with vocational issues, social issues as well as help with finding housing. Twelve-step meetings are hosted on-site, but outside meetings may also be suggested to develop an expansive support system.
Evidence-based treatment methods are utilized by CSWs, Mental Health Nurses (MSNs), Psychiatrists and Psychologists. All staff members are qualified to work in the mental health field.
Extras
A range of services are available that include general health care and help for more intensive mental health concerns. Families may participate in therapeutic sessions at the discretion of the client.
