The Basics
Habilitative Systems Inc. was founded in 1978 by Larry T. Byrd, and provides comprehensive substance abuse treatment and prevention services to the citizens of Chicago, Illinois. Tabitha House was the first sober home for female veterans in Illinois. It serves as a women’s only transitional living facility that offers group and individual therapy and specialty services for clients with co-occurring disorders.
Accommodations and Food
Tabitha House is a 28-bed facility housed in a two-story brick apartment building in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago. The facility offers priority to female veterans, but welcomes all women. Furnished rooms are available for women and their children, and feature twin beds, dressers, shared bathrooms and small kitchenettes. Habilitative Systems Inc. works with local businesses to provides essentials, like clothing and furniture, as well as a food pantry that donates meals to their clients weekly.
There is a computer lab on site where classes are lead in resume building, interviewing skills and job placement assistance. Daily transportation is offered so children can continue to go to school while living at this facility. There are also programs for the women to find more permanent housing that may include financial assistance.
Treatment and Staff
Habilitative Systems Inc. offers a wide variety of therapy and case management services for clients that is individualized. Clients come to Tabitha House because of substance abuse, a co-occurring condition, or were victims of domestic abuse, and there are group and individual therapy sessions offered as well as women’s group that meets weekly on site, which is a group specifically designed to address concerns and offer support.
The therapy is multi-tiered, offering elements of the 12-steps and evidence based methods, like CBT and EMDR. There are psychiatric evaluations, medical services provided and medication management programs. Group therapy emphasizes relapse prevention strategies, coping skills, anger management and parenting classes. There are also classes dedicated to teaching life skills that include exercise and how to incorporate healthy eating habits into their daily lives.
The clinical staff at Habilitative Systems Inc. has experience with substance abuse and behavioral health and accreditations that include LCSW, LMFT, CADC.
Extras
Throughout their time at Tabitha House clients work on an aftercare plan and skill building, and after leaving the facility may still have access to the main facilities outpatient treatment for once a week group therapy.

Tabitha House is very special in the sense that not only does it give so many women and their families a second chance, but also empowers them to change their old way of thinking achieve goals they never thought were possible.
