The Basics
CASA of Livingston County (Council on Alcohol and Substance Abuse of Livingston County) was founded in 1975 in Geneseo, New York. Today, the organization operates two locations in the Livingston County area that both provide outpatient substance abuse treatment to adult men and women.
Treatment and Staff
Clients interested in CASA begin their intake process with a phone assessment with a case manager who takes the client’s personal and insurance information. This is followed by an in-person assessment with a counselor to help determine the client’s needed level of care and if he or she is a good fit for CASA’s services. If the client’s circumstances warrant more extensive treatment, CASA can provide referrals to outside detox and/or residential treatment programs.
CASA’s outpatient program lasts for roughly eight to nine months and meets two to three times a week. The exact length and intensity of the program is based on the counselor’s assessment of the client’s need. CASA’s outpatient program consists of both group and individual therapy. The groups consist of roughly 15 clients but can run even smaller. Counselors structure the groups around education with a set curriculum. Groups can also include sharing and occasionally focus on relapse prevention. Clients also meet with counselors for individual meetings once a week.
Although CASA is not 12-step based, clients are referred to outside AA and NA groups. Some of CASA’s locations also occasionally host AA and NA meetings in the evenings.
CASA is a dual diagnosis organization and clients with potential co-occurring disorders are assigned a mental health counselor. Also, the Geneseo program is located in the same building as the Livingston County Mental Health Department so dual diagnosis clients at that location are referred to that department’s services.
CASA offers a Suboxone program for men and women struggling with opiate addiction. This program begins with a doctor’s assessment where the client is evaluated by a medical staff to ensure that Suboxone treatment is the proper route. Clients who qualify for this program then begin Suboxone treatment and are required to meet with CASA’s doctor once a week for the first four weeks, and then step down to a meeting once every two weeks for the remainder of the program. Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is also provided at both the Geneseo and Dansville locations. This treatment is overseen by a medical director and registered nurse. Clients in need of medical treatment are also offered health assessments and connections with primary care physicians at both these locations.
CASA’s counseling staff consists of CASACs as well as some occasional interns who sit in on group meetings.
Extras
Although CASA does not offer an official family program, counselors do regularly refer family members to outside Alanon groups. Clients can also request meetings with their counselor, family members and themselves.
CASA also doesn’t offer an aftercare program but clients are highly encouraged to attend and continue in outside AA and NA support groups in the area.
The organization offers adolescent counseling and early intervention. CASA also operates a jail program and domestic violence program for court-ordered clients.
In Summary
The Council on Alcohol and Substance Abuse of Livingston County is an affordable and accessible outpatient treatment option. Working alongside the county’s mental health department, clients struggling with both addiction and co-occurring disorders are able to get the care they need. Also, the Suboxone program offers alternative to abstinence-based treatment for those facing severe opiate addictions.
