firelandscounselingservicesThe Basics

Founded in 1985, Firelands Counseling and Recovery Services offers treatment for substance abuse through their behavioral health satellite offices. As a part of Firelands Regional Medical Center, this organization offers an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for both adolescents and adults in Erie, Huron and Sandusky counties in Ohio. The program uses evidence-based practices and encourages participation in self-help groups.

Treatment and Staff

Clients who are interested in treatment must first show up in person for an assessment. They can do this Mondays through Thursdays at 8 am. A counselor conducts an interview to determine if treatment at Firelands would be beneficial. If the program is recommended, counselors  review the client’s addiction and mental health history to design a treatment plan. Support for dual diagnosis is available but detox is not offered.

Treatment at Firelands is individualized. Typically, clients receive a combination of individual and group counseling, although some clients may prefer to stick just with groups. Frequency of individual sessions depends on the client.

Groups meet three times a week, for three hours at a time. Typically, clients attend all sessions, but some may do less depending on their treatment plan. Group times are flexible, with some in the mornings and some in the evenings. Length of treatment depends solely on each client’s progress and what their counselor feels is necessary.

Group therapies include CBT and DBT, and the topics addressed include developing positive coping tools, relapse prevention, anger and stress management, and maintaining motivation for recovery. Though clients are urged to attend outside mutual help programs such as 12-step or SMART Recovery, they are not required to attend meetings.

Counselors on staff are trained to treat those with dual diagnosis. In addition, psychiatric services are available.

Staff members include LADCs, mental health therapists and psychiatrists. There are approximately eight clients for every staff member, although this can vary depending on client enrollment.

Extras

Family counseling and addiction education is a big part of treatment at Firelands. Staff believe spouses, parents, children and other loved ones play an important role in each client’s recovery. Family members are urged to take part in group or individual therapy. Crisis intervention can be facilitated by staff members.

Continuing care is available for those who complete the program or anyone who experiences a relapse.

Firelands has a driver intervention program for those who have been convicted of a DUI.

In Summary

For those in Ohio’s Sandusky, Erie or Huron counties looking for an individualized IOP, Firelands Counseling and Recovery Services may be a good fit. Disregarding the “one size fits all”
approach to recovery, this program works to treat each client uniquely. Through a mixture of therapies, sobriety becomes an attainable goal.
