The Basics
With a history dating back to 1882, Jersey City Medical Center is a full-service hospital in Jersey City, New Jersey. Though the organization has a range of medical services, its behavioral health arm includes detox, outpatient and Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP) for chemical dependency treatment, as well as psychiatric screenings.
Treatment and Staff
Before beginning treatment, clients undergo a comprehensive assessment to determine which track would best suit their needs. If detox is necessary, clients are checked into a short-term, medically monitored stabilization unit of the hospital, during which Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) is available. This phase can also be bundled with the facility’s PHP—a two-day program geared to help reorient clients who have been discharged from a hospital stay. This phase is only for adults aged 18 years and up.
Once stabilized, clients transition into outpatient treatment, which is open to all ages. Though each track is customized and individualized, treatment is in the form of individual, group, marital and family therapy and rely on evidence-based practices such as CBT, DBT, Motivational Interviewing (MI), Mindfulness-Based Cognitive Therapy (MCBT) and general psychotherapy. Because the program has a strong medical and psychiatric component, those with co-occurring disorders can also receive treatment here. While clients are welcome to attend 12-step meetings, they are not a required part of the program.
Staff at Jersey City Medical Center is wide-ranging and includes MDs, RNs, psychologists, psychiatrists and Master’s-level counselors and social workers.
Extras
Aftercare is available in the form of flexible group therapy focused on relapse prevention. Anger management and domestic violence counseling can also be integrated into any of the outpatient programs. Case management is provided for clients with psychiatric disorders in need of help applying for and receiving state benefits. The facility also provides Spanish speaking services. For the mentally ill or disabled, the New Jersey Medical Center has a residential program with 15 beds located nearby called Liberty Park Residence.
In Summary
Jersey City Medical Center provides the kind of thorough medical and psychiatric treatment one would expect from an expansive behavioral health hospital. Outpatient programs are highly flexible and can be customized to each client’s needs, with a wide range of professionally certified staff to help along the way. For locals looking for a solid outpatient program or those struggling with a dual diagnosis, Jersey City Medical Center offers all the components necessary for recovery.
