Community Treatment Center OutpatientThe Basics

Community Treatment Center (CTC) is located in Brevard County, Florida, on the state’s east coast, near the John F. Kennedy Space Center. Founded in 1969, CTC’s mission is “to assist clients to obtain and maintain long-term recovery, comply with the criminal justice system, and reunite having healthy family relationships.”

CTC provides both outpatient and residential transitional care to men and women battling both substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. The inpatient facilities are located in residential areas in the towns of Cocoa and Titusville.

Accommodations and Food

CTC houses up to eight residents at the home in Cocoa and up to 18 at the home in Titusville. Both homes are in quiet suburban neighborhoods and have ample yards that include volleyball nets for recreation. Clients in each residence have roommates and bathrooms are designated by gender. The residences have several common areas for TV, reading and games.

Residents are responsible for their own breakfasts and lunches and make house meals for dinner as part of their chore assignments. Second Harvest, a local food bank, provides much of the homes’ weekly groceries. The staff makes expeditions for meat shopping throughout the week to round out the Second Harvest delivery.

Treatment and Staff

Many clients come to CTC’s homes after completing a 28-day residential treatment program or upon leaving incarceration. For the first three to seven days of their stay, residents are restricted to the premises for observation and stabilization. After this initial period, CTC helps the client focus on obtaining employment. The house counselors work with them to create a resume and then facilitate appointments with local businesses and vocational training programs. Clients are expected to fill out four job applications each day until they find employment.

Residents have mandatory group therapy four evenings a week from 6 to 7:30pm. Implementing CBT and Motivational Interviewing (MI). Group topics include the disease of addiction and relapse prevention. Residents also have individual therapy, a minimum of two sessions each month. Each resident is required to attend four 12-step meetings in the community each week, and residents who are parents are also required to attend a weekly parenting class.

CTC specializes in treating clients with co-occurring disorders. Typically, clients have a significant chemical dependency diagnosis and a less significant mental health diagnosis. If a client’s mental health condition escalates, he or she is taken to treatment at a nearby mental health clinic or hospital. The treatment team at CTC includes addiction counselors such as CADCs and CAPs and Master’s-level therapists including MFTs and MSWs. The house staff all have addiction counseling credentials and have been in recovery for several years.

Extras

Family can visit the facilities with staff approval, though most residents will qualify for passes to visit family as they progress through treatment. An weekly aftercare group is available for residents who’ve completed treatment who’d like extra support.

In Summary

Since 1969, Community Treatment Center has been providing effective transitional care to men and women with co-occurring disorders. By helping residents find employment and connect with others in the local recovery community through 12-step meetings, CTC ensures that residents will have social support and financial means as they take their first steps in sober independent living.
