The Basics
Alpha Behavioral Health Center in northeastern South Carolina offers outpatient substance abuse treatment for adults and adolescents. With three locations in Chesterfield, Bishopville and Camden, Alpha has been assisting the community with intervention, prevention and recovery services since 1971.
Treatment and Staff
The first step in Alpha treatment is an assessment by a Master’s-level addiction counselor. Once diagnosed, the client will be given an outline for a treatment plan. The center does not have designated tracks—rather, each client will receive an individualized plan based on his or her specific needs.
Typically, outpatient clients meet once a week for a two hour group session and a one hour individual therapy session, or more as needed. Group sessions use a CBT approach and topics include relapse prevention, identifying triggers, anger management as well as educational lectures on family dynamics and addiction studies. Duration for outpatient varies, but usually continues for at least six weeks. Group size is limited to eight clients. Alpha suggests that clients become involved in outside programs like 12-step groups and SMART recovery, but attendance is not a requirement.
Clients in the adolescent outpatient program meet twice weekly; for a group session and one individual session. The age range is anywhere from 12 to 17 and, while parents or legal guardians are not required to attend therapy, family group and parenting classes are encouraged. Groups also use CBT and topics include peer pressure and the science of addiction. Typically young people attend the outpatient program for eight weeks.
The treatment team at the Alpha includes CADCs and Master’s-level addiction therapists as well as a MFT. All three Alpha clinics are open from 8:30 am until 5:30 pm Mondays through Fridays.
Extras
Alpha also offers an employee assistance program which works closely with the client’s human resources department to help them retain employment while receiving treatment. Counseling for family members of addicts is also available. Other programs include a diversion program for clients referred by drug court, an Alcohol and Drug Safety Program to educate individuals on decreasing the risks of DUI/DWI offenses.
In Summary
Alpha Behavioral Health provides very basic outpatient substance abuse treatment for adults and adolescents. Offering a low to no-cost recovery option for individuals experiencing financial hardship, Alpha is a good choice for self-motivated individuals looking or a no-frills outpatient program to help them develop a sober, healthy lifestyle.
