The Basics
Home of Grace Addiction Treatment Center is a Christian-based inpatient substance abuse facility with locations in the Mississippi Gulf Coast towns of Vancleave and Gautier. The facility was founded in January of 1965 by Reverend Bill Barton. He was inspired to open Home of Grace after visiting a Christian recovery program for alcoholics in Tallulah Falls, Georgia called Victory Home. He realized there were no similar programs in his area and set out to change that.
Accommodations and Food
There are two separate campuses for men and women. The women’s campus is located in Gautier near the National Wildlife Sandhill Crane Refuge and the men’s campus is situated in Vancleave bordered by Bluff Creek. The women’s campus features a dining hall, cottages, bathrooms in each cottage, classrooms, private counseling areas, group counseling areas, a craft room and group conversation areas. The men’s campus has similar accommodations but also has a media room, volleyball, laundry and a chapel. Treatment and housing are in one place. Residents are served restaurant quality food for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
Treatment and Staff
Home of Grace is a three-month program based on a Christian-centered curriculum that consists of two phases. The phases build upon each other and have specific focus, goals, responsibilities and requirements for successful completion. Priority is placed on spiritual discipline and is attained through classroom work, individual and group counseling, work therapy and community living. Home of Grace does not provide detox or offer dual diagnosis support. Treatment includes Bible study, regular worship, devotional services and a schedule designed to prepare clients for real life after they graduate from the program. The residents also attend individual counseling once a week for an hour.
After clients complete a week of orientation they embark on classes that include Biblical Life Application, Relapse/Recovery Skills, Emotional Healing, Developing Healthy Relationships, Parenting Skills and Basic Life Skills that include work ethic, financial recovery and money management. The daily schedule at Home of Grace is Monday to Friday devotionals, scheduled classes, work detail, individual and group counseling, recreational activities and evening chapel service. On Saturdays, clients attend recreation, personal enrichment classes and evening chapel service. On Sundays, clients just attend morning and evening chapel service.
Residents are not allowed to have cell phones on the premises under any circumstances, but they are allowed to use the land line phones on-site. During Phase One of the program, clients are able to call under the discretion of the counselor and in Phase Two of the program, clients are given one 15-minute phone slot per week. They are unable to receive calls.
The leadership of Home of Grace stays within the Barton family. The current executive director is a third generation family member to step into the role. Other staff have experience in business and faith-based recovery. The staff-to-client ratio at the men’s facility is one counselor to 20 to 25 residents and at the women’s facility it’s three counselors for every 10 residents. The clinical staff are licensed under the Mississippi Association of Addiction Professionals (MAAPS) and most hold degrees in counseling.
Extras
Clients are provided structured quiet time, journaling, personal and group devotions, chapel and worship services and special ministry events.
There is a medical clinic on the premises where volunteer doctors and nurses come twice a week to treat residents for minor ailments. There is also an Adult Education Program for residents who do not have a high school diploma.
In Summary
Home of Grace Addiction Treatment Center is a three month program that is centered on Christian principles. Those who need treatment for co-occurring disorders might need to keep exploring options, but for those seeking a faith-based approach to substance abuse issues with gender-specific programming, this could be a good fit.
