Santa Ana CaliforniaThe Basics

Dr. Michael Stone opened Cornerstone of Southern California in Orange County in 1984 and since then has served over 60,000 clients for substance abuse and co-occurring disorders. In addition to residential treatment, this facility offers a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) and standard outpatient treatment.

Treatment and Staff

Treatment is individualized to suit each clients’ particular needs, and begins with an in-person assessment with an intake specialist takes into account what would be the most effective program. Typically those coming out of a residential program will opt for the day program, or PHP, which is five days a week and three hours a day. Then there is the IOP, which is three days a week for three hours, and the last level is the standard outpatient, which is once a week for an hour and a half. Some clients commute from home to take part in these programs, while others opt to stay at the facilities’ sober living homes. There are flexible treatment hours offered, seven days a week, with morning or evening schedules.

The treatment philosophy is based on the 12 steps and offers evidence-based therapy treatment models like CBT or DBT. There are alternative treatment methods, like Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) to help with cravings and medication management services for clients with an existing dual diagnosis. The outpatient programs integrate group and individual therapy sessions throughout the process, and since the treatment is so client focused, depending on what feels the most effective, clients can either have a combination of group and individual sessions, or just do one or the other. Clients are also required to attend outside AA or NA meetings several nights a week and get a sponsor.

A large part of treatment is also educating the client and their families about the disease of addiction, and offers lectures, and assignments, like journaling or reading, as part of the programming. Relapse prevention, coping skills, and identifying triggers is a topic of group sessions, as well as more holistic techniques, like mediation, are suggested.

The staff is overseen my program director and founder, Dr. Michael Stone, and offers accreditations like CADC, Master’s-level MFT, psychologists, case managers and music therapists.

Extras

There are family and aftercare programs offered for free for graduates and family members of graduates. The family program consists of weekly group therapy sessions, and the aftercare is an hour an a half group session for as long as the client would like to attend. An alumni group offers events and meet ups once a week at the facility and provides an additional support system.

In Summary

Cornerstone offers balanced, comprehensive care with the client’s actual needs and treatment desires in mind, which is made evident by the strong alumni and aftercare programs that are offered. The holistic, whole person approach makes for a valuable experience for those seeking a program that goes at a pace they are comfortable with, as opposed to being forced to comply with someone else’s version of what is best.
