Crawford Mental Health

The Basics

Crawford Mental Health was founded in 1983 in Pittsburg, Kansas, the most populous city of Crawford County in the southeastern region of the sate. The government-funded organization offers a variety of mental health and substance abuse programs including a co-ed residential program, an all women’s residential program and outpatient treatment programs for adult men and women in greater Crawford County.

Accommodations and Food

The co-ed inpatient program operates out of a 24-bed facility in Pittsburg. The building houses men and women in separate wings with two clients to a room. Each room has two twin beds and a small area for clients to house their clothes and belongings. Each room shares a bathroom with another room, with four clients per bathroom.

The facility has an on-staff cook who prepares three meals a day. The cook can accommodate dietary restrictions or allergies. Clients can also have approved family members bring in outside food or drinks.

Crawford’s women’s inpatient facility is a large 12-bed house in Pittsburg. Each resident has their own room, and women with children are allowed to have their children stay at the house with them as well.

The cooking at the women’s house is done by the clients with usually one or two women handling all of the cooking and meal preparation for everyone in the house. Women without jobs or insurance are required to apply for food stamps which Crawford uses to pay for their rent and food.

Treatment and Staff

To qualify for any of Crawford’s programs, clients must receive a drug and alcohol assessment from the Crawford County Mental Health department. This assessment determines what level of care the client needs and what program would be the best fit. Clients who undergo this assessment and qualify for government funding, are able to use Crawford’s facilities and programs free of charge. Also, if the client is in need of detox, he or she is referred to an outside local detox facility.

If the client qualifies for inpatient care, he or she is given a date for when they are allowed to move into the facility. There is usually a three-week wait list for beds at the women’s house and co-ed inpatient program.

Crawford’s treatment program at the co-ed facility consists of both group and individual therapy and lasts for 30 days. Each day begins with a mediation session followed by a group meeting. Crawford offers a variety of different types of groups including relapse prevention, co-occurring disorder groups, 12-step groups and spirituality groups. Individual meetings are available based on the needs of the client.

The program utilizes the 12 steps and the program has a focus group in the evening where clients read from the Big Book. Clients also attend an AA and NA meeting every evening.

Crawford’s women’s program lasts for three months and also consists of group and individual counseling. Counselors in this program run a variety of groups including a self-esteem group, relapse therapy groups, co-dependency groups, domestic violence groups and thinking for a change group in which counselors use CBT. Individual therapy is scheduled accordingly for each client. Clients in the women’s program attend an outside AA or NA meeting once a day too.

Crawford also operates an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) as well as a regular outpatient program. Clients can enter directly into these programs, or can step down from one of Crawford’s residential facilities. The length and intensity of the IOP depends entirely on the needs of the client. Counselors work with clients to assign them to specific groups during the week. The outpatient program operates the same way, but with a cap at a maximum of nine hours of treatment per week.

The facility is dual diagnosis and sets up clients with potential co-occurring disorders with a meeting in their mental health department. All of Crawford’s programs also include co-occurring groups that address dual diagnosis needs and issues.

Crawford’s staff consists of a mixture of LMSW, LAC, LPC and LCAC counselors. The mental health department has RNs on staff as well.

Extras

The inpatient program also offers a family group every Thursday from 2pm to 5pm. The first hour of this group is Alanon with the following two hours being family counseling and substance abuse education.

Clients at the women’s house are given a free membership to the local YMCA, which residents frequently visit for recreation. Crawford also offers career services for clients of the women’s house and helps clients find jobs through Kansas Works while staying at the house.

In Summary

Crawford Mental Health is an affordable, comprehensive substance abuse treatment organization. The variety of groups offered in all of Crawford’s programs provids not only many different options for clients but also the ability for counselors to try different approaches to meet each client’s individual needs.  Also, the mixture of Alanon and family counseling in the inpatient programs allows family members of clients an opportunity to heal themselves as their loved one begins recovery.
