The Basics
Founded ten years ago in Prescott, Arizona by Reverend Paul Pounds, Penny’s Place provides faith-based sober living for men in recovery. Penny’s Place was named for Pounds’ mother. Their mission is to help newly clean and sober men rebuild new lives, by learning to rely on Christ as their Higher Power.
Accommodations and Amenities
Penny’s Place has a six-bed capacity. Clients reside in fully furnished single rooms which include a full-sized bed, 32 inch color TV with a DVD player and dresser. Residents are responsible for their own groceries and meal preparation, which is conducted in a fully equipped kitchen. Amenities include a washer and dryer, but residents must do their laundry on a designated day. Internet, cell phones and cable TV are allowed, but clients are responsible for expenses. Often residents chip in and purchase those utilities. Smoking is permitted outside in designated areas only.
Rules and Regulations
Potential clients must have undergone detox, and a comprehensive interview to ensure that Penny’s Place is an appropriate fit. During the assessment, they are asked if they believe in God and Jesus Christ. While Penny’s Place works with men who have a willingness in pursuing a faith-based route, men who harbor conflicts against the concept of Christ are usually not admitted. Maximum length of stay is two years.
Weekly requirements include attending one New Life Recovery meeting at a nearby church, participating in Bible study, attending Sunday church services, as well as being at Sunday school between 10 and 11 am. All residents must attend the house meeting, which is held on the first Saturday of the month. Penny’s Place does not discriminate against 12-step programs, and in addition to the faith-based recovery meeting, some residents attend AA/NA meetings.
Random drug and alcohol screenings are conducted. At Penny’s Place, a two-strike rule is enforced. Upon an initial relapse, residents are heavily monitored for 90 days. After a second relapse, the client is immediately dismissed from the premises. The curfew is 10 pm Sundays through Thursdays. Residents are asked to return by a reasonable time on Fridays and Saturdays.
Extras
Performance of household chores is also required, and all residents must participate in a Saturday super scrub.
In Summary
For those seeking a sober living environment with a spiritual approach, this might be a good fit. Although the requirement for potential residents to use Christ as their Higher Power may not be right for everyone, Penny’s Place is a perfect match for those motivated to participate in a church and a structured recovery program.
