The Basics
With two sober living homes in Charleston, South Carolina, The Sanctuary at Mount Pleasant offers a supportive environment for men seeking to continue their recovery from substance abuse. Both homes are owned and operated by recovering alcoholics and addicts. With a comfortable and intimate home setting, a recovery-focused plan and structured rules, potential clients can expect to be immersed in a culture of sobriety and fellowship.
Accommodations and Amenities
Both Sanctuary houses are situated in quiet residential neighborhoods and have all the comforts of home. The Old Village house is a single-story, mid-century brick house surrounded by giant, shady oak trees. The living room is furnished with three comfortable couches, cable TV and large windows that allow plenty of natural light. The eat-in kitchen is fully stocked with cooking supplies and appliances and has a large table for communal dining.
At the back of the house are four bedrooms, one of which is reserved for the in-house manager. The three shared bedrooms are divided according to status in the house. The senior bedroom is a double with two twin beds, a bookshelf and two bedside tables, a shared closet and dresser. The second and third bedrooms have two sets of bunk beds, dressers and a walk-in closet. All linens and towels are provided. The backyard has a large patio with a barbecue, furniture for outdoor dining and an elevated tree-house deck with additional seating.
The other Sanctuary residence—the Towne Center house—has contemporary décor and can accommodate 12 residents in two senior double bedrooms and two quad rooms with bunk beds. The senior rooms have two twin beds, a shared dresser, closet and en-suite bathrooms. The two quad rooms have stacked dressers to maximize space and a shared bathroom between them, each with a shower and dual sinks. Storage of personal belongings is available under sinks and in an additional storage shed in the backyard.
The open floor plan has a living room that doubles as a meeting space and is furnished with three couches and cable TV. The kitchen, which overlooks the living room, features a breakfast bar and all required utensils and appliances for residents to prepare their meals.
Since Towne Center is more centrally-located than Old Village, it is close to employment opportunities and community 12-step meetings. Residents can bike or use public transportation to access downtown Charleston and nearby beaches for recreation and employment opportunities.
Rules and Regulations
Sanctuary enforces a set of rules for the safety of all residents. Above all, house members must refrain from the use of alcohol and drugs. If a resident is discovered to be under the influence or has possession of any substances, they will be immediately evicted and forfeit any rent already paid. Clients are required to stay for a minimum of 28 days but it is recommended that they stay a minimum of three months to fully absorb the benefits of a sober living community.
The first 30 days is a probationary period. Residents must obtain employment or enroll in school during this time, and curfew is 11 pm Sunday through Thursday and at midnight Friday and Saturday. No overnight passes are permitted. Probationary residents are also on a buddy system for their first seven days (unless they are already employed). Residents seeking employment must be approved to work at an establishment that serves alcohol. Until employment is secured, clients must complete 20 hours of volunteer work.
Attendance at 12-step meetings is required and residents must find a sponsor and home group during the first two weeks of residence. At the end of 30 days, each resident is assessed and a vote is held to determine whether they can continue their stay at Sanctuary.
All residents must complete 90 meetings in 90 days with the fellowship of their choosing. After 90 days, they must continue to attend four meetings per week until they are ready to leave Sanctuary. No intimate relationships are permitted in the first 90 days and no relationships with other clients are allowed at any time.
All residents must be out of bed and ready for the day by 9 am. Weekly chores are assigned and expected to be completed by 11 am. During the week, residents are not allowed to watch TV between the hours of 9 am and 5 pm as they are expected to use their time productively—whether working, seeking employment, volunteering or at school. Immediate eviction is possible if residents engage in verbal arguments, violent threats, gossiping, gambling or theft, refuse a drug test or Breathalyzer, fail to inform management of another client’s relapse or engage in general disruptive behavior. In addition, all house members must respect the anonymity of the house itself and its residents.
Extras
Sanctuary works closely with several detox facilities and therapists in the area. If a resident is in need of additional services while enrolled, staff will coordinate with providers accordingly.
In Summary
Offering affordable gender-specific sober living, Sanctuary’s homes are ideal for men seeking structure, community and 12-step based recovery support. The organization accepts clients fresh out of detox or treatment as well as men with several years of recovery. With a strong foundation in AA/NA, all residents are introduced to the recovery way of life and surrounded by fellows who share their experience, strength and hope in the home and at meetings.
