The Basics
Founded in 2015 in Nashville, Tennessee by Brian Thompson and David Goodman, Rally House provides secure, supportive and safe sober living for highly motivated men who want to develop a solid foundation in recovery. Thompson and Goodman are both in recovery, and maintain active roles with the house. Both men worked at a residential treatment center, and by opening Rally House, they have incorporated life skills groups plus a high degree of structure, in the house’s 12-step based protocol.
Accommodations and Amenities
Rally House accommodates no more than eight clients in a ranch style house that has brick siding, a low-pitched white roof and a long paved driveway. The house sits atop a small hill adorned with a pristine lawn, hedges and trees. The interior includes three upstairs bedrooms, an apartment studio with two beds, two fully equipped kitchens and three full bathrooms. Clients are paired in spacious rooms, which include new twin beds with dark wood storage bins, white-paned windows and modern style lamps, contemporary nightstands and closets. All mattresses and beds are brand new. Electronics are not allowed in rooms.
The spacious wood tiled living room has white walls and windows that provide ample sunlight. Furnishings include a leather recliner, red velvet love seat, vintage style armchairs and an ornate Oriental rug. There is a huge flat screen television and bookshelves. One of the kitchens includes white cabinets and matching white appliances. The adjacent dining room has a country style dining room table, matching chairs, a piano and a rustic ceiling fan. Clients are responsible for their own groceries, and meal preparation. Amenities include Wi-Fi, Cable TV, X-boxes and a laundry room. There are two designated outdoor smoking areas.
Thompson lives on the premises as Rally House’s residential manager. Goodman is the case manager, and ensures that clients receive individualized recovery plans.
Rules and Regulations
With a focus on providing structure, and installing accountability in clients, Thompson and Goodman look for potential clients who are serious about recovery and who want to create healthy, new lives. Typically, they receive clients who have successfully graduated from a residential treatment facility. Rally House requires a minimum of two weeks of verified sobriety, and prefers that clients stay for a minimum of six months so that they can learn and practice healthy new habits, and have a better chance of staying clean and sober.
Upon arrival, clients must attend 90 12-step meetings in 90 days. Other requirements include attending three weekly house meetings, which count towards the required weekly quota. One meeting is a life skills group taught by Jennifer Hurst, a Master’s-level psychologist who teaches coping mechanisms. During group, clients also learn about interpersonal relationships. This includes dealing with stressors and learning how to interacting with other people. If a client requires dual diagnosis support, and Hurst provides appropriate psychiatric referrals. The other peer-run meetings include guided meditation, a topic discussion and recovery support.
During the day, residents can’t loiter around the house. They must be attending an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), working, or performing community service. Rally House has relationships with Cumberland Heights and TriStar Parthenon Pavilion. Both facilities provide IOP.
Dating is forbidden. Additionally, residents can’t pursue a new romantic relationship during the first year of residency. This rule is enforced with the belief that often newcomers who get caught up in a new intimate relationship can make destructive decisions that can hinder their recovery. The curfew is 10:30 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. While Rally House practices a zero tolerance policy, which includes immediate dismissal, staff ensures that those who have relapsed have a safe place to land. Clients who relapse can return on a case-by-case basis, but must start over from the beginning. They must acquire a sponsor, and attend 90 12-step meetings in 90 days.
Extras
Other services besides housing include a nightly 10th step check in, employment and school assistance and case management. Dutch, a 115 pound, black Labrador retriever resides on the premises, and provides canine therapy.
Rally House is an affiliate of the Tennessee Association of Recovery Residences, which demands high standards from its members.
In Summary
Rally House provides a beautiful house, a solid 12-step based recovery protocol and additional services which many clients need in early recovery. Thompson and Goodman are dedicated to their clients, and there is a great sense of camaraderie to be found here. Rally House does not like to disclose their address, for the privacy and safety of residents.
