The Basics

Five Sandoval Indian Pueblos, Inc. (FSIP) was founded in 1966 in Rio Rancho, New Mexico. The organization offers behavioral health services to over 8,200 Pueblo Indians of Cochiti, Jemez, Sandia, Santa Ana and Zia as well as clients from non-Native American backgrounds. FSIP’s substance abuse program consists of outpatient treatment for adult men and women.

Treatment and Staff

The intake process at FSIP begins with a brief phone assessment with a case manager to help determine if the client is a good fit for the organization’s services. He or she then visits the facility for a more in-depth in-person assessment that lasts two hours, where the client meets with a counselor to help chart out their treatment plan. If clients do not have insurance at this time, they apply for Medicaid with the counselor’s help during this meeting. Clients who are in need of a higher level of care are referred to an outside residential or detox program.

FSIP’s outpatient program consists of both group and individual therapy and lasts for as long as the counselors believe the clients need treatment. FSIP offers group meetings once a week on Mondays which entail both sharing and education with a focus on relapse prevention too. The group sizes are generally small with a staff-to-client ration of one-to-five or 10. Clients also meet regularly with counselors for individual therapy and the intensity of these meetings is based on the needs of the client. Although FSIP does not incorporate the principles of 12-step recovery in its programming, clients are encouraged to attend outside AA/NA meetings.

The program supports clients with dual diagnosis and clients with potential co-occurring disorders are referred to FSIP’s on-staff mental health counselors.

All of the counselors in the substance abuse program are LADCs.

Extras

Although FSIP does not have an official family program, clients can request private meetings with their counselor, family members and themselves. These meetings cover co-dependency issues as well as substance abuse education. Counselors occasionally also perform home visits to monitor clients progress through the program.

FSIP also offers DWI classes and a First Offenders Education Program to court ordered clients. The community at large may also benefit from a Head Start program, food distribution, elderly programs or employment programs. Additionally, the organization offers weekly acudetox therapy to clients.
