wellington, florida The Basics

Founded in 2005 in Wellington, Florida, by Kim Koslow, Butterfly House provides high end sober living along with aftercare, for women. The house specializes in those recovering from substance addiction and co-occurring disorders, specifically trauma. Koslow has been clean and sober for 17 years. Butterfly House caters to clients over 40, and provides an intimate and nurturing environment.

Butterfly House’s name is inspired by author Maya Angelou’s quote, which states, “We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” At Butterfly House, women are provided with a plethora of support so that they can undergo a healthy transformation in early recovery.

Accommodations and Amenities

Butterfly House is a ranch-style residence, which accommodates no more than eight women, on an 8,000 square foot estate. There are four private rooms, each holding one client and one master suite which accommodates four women, and includes a huge bathroom. A typical bedroom includes pastel colored walls with white trim, a large window, a vanity dresser, a queen-sized bed and closet space.

The clients are responsible for their own groceries, and they take turns preparing meals in a gourmet wood-tiled kitchen which features wall to wall white cabinets, a stainless steel refrigerator, dining table and a chandelier. The women dine family-style. This encourages clients to establish bonds, and to work on helping each other. Additionally, they function as a community and after meals, they participate in kitchen clean up.

Other amenities include a weekly housekeeper, transportation, an enclosed pool, spa, well-equipped gym, Wi-Fi, Cable TV, laundry room and a recovery coach who is available 24/7. The luxury pool with patio is enclosed in a glass covering. The patio area includes palm trees and lush greenery. House managers live on the premises, and provide around the clock supervision.

Rules and Regulations

At Butterfly House, clients must have undergone detox, and they prefer those who have undergone at least 30 days of primary care at a drug rehab. The average length of stay is between three and six months, but some clients have stayed there longer than a year.

Butterfly House focuses on helping women with trauma issues. Other services besides housing include five weekly process groups, case management, medication management, evening wrap up discussion. Group topics include life skills, relapse prevention and trauma. The evening wrap up is a discussion that revolves around goal planning, and other recovery issues. Staff helps clients match up with an appropriate psychiatrist, and medications are locked up. Additionally, no narcotics or benzodiazepines are allowed on the premises.

As a 12-step sober living home, clients must attend one daily AA/NA meeting, acquire and actively work with a sponsor, and complete their steps. The curfew is 11 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. At Butterfly House, random drug and alcohol testing is conducted. A zero tolerance policy is enforced, and those who have relapsed are dismissed from the house.

Koslow is a licensed mental health counselor, an interventionist, a certified trauma specialist and a certified addiction specialist. Besides Koslow, staff includes Elle DuPree, a Master’s-level social worker and clinical director, as well as co-founder Hester Williams, the spiritual care manager. Williams is a cognitive behavioral health technician. Additionally, there is an operations manager and five recovery coaches.

Extras

Other services offered include holistic healing techniques like Reiki healing, daily prayer and reflection group, yoga, meditation and mindfulness, a weekly individual life coaching session, conscious living skills workshops and creative arts therapy.

Butterfly House is a member of the Florida Association of Recovery Residences (FARR).

Koslow is friends with former American Major League Baseball Outfielder Darryl Strawberry and his wife Tracy Strawberry. She works closely with the couple, who are both in long term recovery. Koslow often refers this who need a higher level of care to the Strawberry’s organization, The Darryl Strawberry Recovery Center, a substance abuse treatment facility.

In Summary

There are not many sober living homes which specifically cater to older women, especially those with trauma issues. Butterfly House not only offers comprehensive services, but a spiritual oasis for women to heal from the damaging effects of addiction, plus learn how to love themselves while they stay clean and sober.
