The Basics

Located in Powell River, British Columbia, Canada, Sunshine Coast Health Centre is a non-profit behavioral health organization providing detox, residential treatment and sober living homes for men recovering from chemical dependency. Though much of the programming is tailored to alcohol and cocaine addiction, anyone suffering from substance abuse issues can also receive treatment here.

Accommodations and Food

The Sunshine Coast Health Centre facility is an expansive compound with a cedar shake exterior, complete with four detox and 36 primary care beds. Residents can stay in both private or semi-private rooms, the latter shared with one other roommate. The facility features an expansive recreational room with several leather recliners and a widescreen television, foosball and ping-pong tables, musical instruments and a shared cafeteria. The seven-acre property directly faces the Powell River with private beach access. There is an on-site fitness center with a lap pool, work-out equipment and an outdoor basketball hoop.

All clients get initial and mid-program diet consultations that help staff to design individual meal plans. Breakfast often consists of heartier fare like pancakes and sausage, while lunch and dinner include a range of options such as Thai chicken salad and salmon fettuccini. Treatment and Staff

Detox is a five-day program with travel assistance, medical supervision, nursing consultations and psycho-educational groups. After stabilization, clients continue on to a more structured recovery program.

Clients can enroll in a primary addiction program with 30-, 42-, 60- and 90-day duration option. Treatment typically runs from 7 am to 9 pm each day and incorporates psychotherapy groups, rotating workshops and activity time. A wide number of evidence-based modalities are used and all care plans are individualized, though typically comprised of group and individual therapy, CBT, art and music therapy. Treatment at Sunshine Coast Health Centre is not based in 12-step principles, instead taking a Rogerian or person-centered psychological approach. However, residents may attend off-site AA/NA or SMART Recovery meetings if they wish.

An additional dimension of treatment is offered for clients who enroll in the trauma program, which provides further dual diagnosis support and holistic care including meditation, hypnotherapy, EMDR and neurofeedback.

Staff consists of Master’s- and PhD-level psychotherapists, art therapists, doctors, LPNs and RNs.

Extras

Once clients have completed one of the above programs, they can continue on to a 14- to 20-day alumni program that also serves as a transitional aftercare option. During this stage, alums learn relapse prevention strategies and prepare to reintegrate into society. This phase is essentially sober living, as residents still live at the same facility. Clients can also attend a family program and/or couples therapy as standalone services.
