The Basics
Located in the Tri-Cities area in Kennewick, Washington, First Step Community Counseling Services offers outpatient treatment for chemical dependency. Programs are available for adults, adolescents and their supporting family members. Opened in December of 2006, FSCCS offers a range of tracks that comply with court requirements, assessments for DUIs, school-based programs, family services, drug testing and aftercare.
Treatment and Staff
First Step Community Counseling Services offers a wide range of services for the community. Prior to enrolling into a program, all clients must first schedule an appointment for an assessment to determine which level of treatment best suits the individual. While there is no detox offered at First Step, referrals are available as needed.
Following the assessment, clients are enrolled in an appropriate program and an individualized treatment plan is developed. Clients may be placed in a standard outpatient, an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for youth or adults, Deferred Prosecution Program or other court-ordered alternatives. The treatment staff utilizes evidence-based practices and all counselors are trained in Moral Reconation Therapy (MRT), CBT techniques, Motivational Interviewing (MI) and the Matrix Model.
The standard outpatient track is an individualized program and clients may attend sessions once or twice per week depending on their unique needs. Both group therapy in co-ed groups as well as gender-specific groups are available. Groups have specific topics for each day and may focus on relapse prevention, psycho-education or development of new coping skills to name a few. Additionally, individual therapy sessions can be scheduled with a primary counselor.
Clients enrolled in the IOP track attend sessions three times per week for three hours each day for a 16-week period. Clients utilize the Matrix Model workbooks and work closely with their counselor to confront damaging behavior and belief patterns. IOP clients may step down to the standard outpatient track following the IOP or they may choose aftercare.
All clients must attend 12-step meetings in tandem with their program for supplemental support. Abstinence is required and most clients are randomly screened for drug use and alcohol to ensure they are staying sober.
The court programs available through First Step meet court requirements to assist clients in avoiding jail time. The Deferred Prosecution Program is for clients who have received a DUI and is a five-year probation plan that allows clients to work towards securing their license. Clients must attend 12-step meetings, case management sessions, psychoeducational groups and must be drug tested and screened frequently for alcohol and drug use.
All groups and sessions are facilitated by mental health professionals or individuals in process of their licensure. Credentials include LCDCs and additional training certifications to provide MRT.
Extras
First Step also facilitates panels for victims of those with DUI offenses as well as seminars focused on preventing new occurrences and fatalities.
Aftercare is available for clients who have completed treatment at their facility. Special continuing care groups for youth and a monthly or weekly aftercare group are available for adults. These groups meet once per week and focus on relapse prevention and staying on the path to recovery.
Seminars and therapy are also available for families that wish to be involved in the recovery process of their loved one. The parenting classes are educational and the counseling sessions work to repair damaged trust and prevent enabling for the future.
In Summary
First Step Community Counseling Services offers a wide range of substance abuse programs for self-referred individuals and as well as court-ordered clients those with DUIs. The outpatient programs for youth and adults are individualized and work to provide each client with the opportunity to recover and start anew without compromising their work, school or family obligations.
