The Basics
Based out of Espanola and Albuquerque, New Mexico, Circle of Life provides culturally sensitive outpatient substance abuse programs for Native American adults and adolescents. The organization’s focus is on blending Western therapeutic models with older healing traditions. Circle of Life North in Espanola, offers basic outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) to adults and adolescents, while Circle of Life South in Albuquerque offers treatment and assessments to adolescents only. Both programs are a part of Eight Northern Indian Pueblos Council Inc (ENIPC) and all clients must be Native American and present tribal cards, as well as proof of insurance, upon admission.
Treatment and Staff
All programs are highly individualized, partly because most of the clients are court-ordered. Treatment can last anywhere from 60 to 90 days or up to several years—though most plans are around six months. The IOP tracks generally run from Monday through Thursday at various times. Groups focus on early recovery, relapse prevention and substance abuse education.
Treatment is primarily based in the 12 Steps, though it also integrates the Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) model. Though the facility does not officially use the Matrix Model, components of it are interwoven with traditional Native American perspective. Other modalities include CBT, art therapy and EMDR.
Staff of Circle is comprised of approximately 12 therapists whose credentials include LADC, LPCC, LSW, LMHC and an LSA. Eight are on-staff at the North office in Espanola.
Extras
Both of Circle of Life locations offer family therapy and it has a gambling addiction program open to all New Mexico residents, including non-Native Americans. Financial assistance is available in both locations. For more hands-on care, the organization has New Moon Lodge, an adult residential program, and Butterfly Healing Center for adolescents.
In Summary
While Circle of Life offers treatment for a very specific demographic, its programs are a good blend of traditional and evidence-based therapies with Native American concepts and values, making it an attractive choice for clients looking for spirituality they are familiar with. With two convenient locations in North Central New Mexico, the programs’ professional staff and an array of therapy options make it a great choice for qualifying addicts looking for treatment in the area.
