inexpensive rehabs in Detroit, MIThe Basics

Located in Detroit, Michigan, Jefferson House is a CARF-accredited residential treatment program for men struggling with chemical dependency. As a subsidiary of Capuchin Soup Kitchen, a non-profit organization catering to the homeless, residents of Jefferson House have typically been through primary care before but weren’t able to remain sober. For many, the program serves as a last chance at recovery.

Accommodations and Food

Jefferson House operates out of an historic brick Detroit manor with high ceilings, tall windows and ample space. The home can accommodate up to 12 men at a time, with two large bedrooms sleeping three clients and three medium-sized rooms that sleep two. There is a common work-out area with basic equipment, a fully-equipped kitchen, on-site laundry and a living room with a television for residents to share during down time. Though clients are in charge of cooking their own meals, the program assists with Bridge Card applications which are used to purchase groceries. While all use the kitchen to make their own breakfast and lunch, dinner is generally served for the whole house by a rotating crew of residents.

Treatment and Staff

The program is an extended treatment track, typically lasting for six to nine months. Self-reliance is a major tenet at Jefferson House, so clients spend time learning life skills and participating in volunteer work in the community. They can also work at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen to earn a small stipend. Treatment consists of group and individual therapy based on 12-step concepts and didactic counseling for anger management. Clients are required to attend AA/NA meetings every night during the week. Weekends are encouraged but not mandated.

Staff consists of three house managers, a house coordinator, a program director and several state-certified CADCs.

Extras

The program is affiliated with the Capuchin Soup Kitchen, which provides ministry services and meal programs for the homeless and a children’s program that encourages creative expression and teaches alternatives to violence.

In Summary

Jefferson House’s extended residential addiction treatment program is a valuable resource for the low-income and homeless community in Detroit. Because of the organization’s non-profit status, it is able to offer treatment free of charge to those who qualify. While some struggling with more complex issues or co-occurring disorders may need more intensive care, Jefferson House remains an excellent option for it’s target demographic, particularly those struggling with chronic relapse.
