Kinnic Falls Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services Inc.The Basics

Just across the Minnesota state line, about 25 miles from St. Paul, Kinnic Falls Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services Inc., is located in River Falls, Wisconsin. This non-profit sober living has been open since 1972. It was created by a couple that saw the need for a facility where people could turn after completing primary care. The facility’s mission is to provide a safe place for males to recover from substance abuse at their own pace. It utilizes therapeutic programming, community involvement through employment, volunteer services and 12-step recovery principles.

Accommodations and Amenities

Clients can stay up to 90 days and are able to rebuild their lives in an environment that’s safe and sober. Additionally licensed as a treatment facility, Kinnic Falls offers clients therapy and daily support services while they still lead independent lives.

Clients are housed two per room with twin beds, a dresser and a desk. Some rooms have adjoining bathrooms, but there are bathrooms throughout the facility. Kinnic Falls can house 44 men but will increase to 52 in the fall of 2016. Meals at Kinnic Falls are inclusive during the clients’ stay. It is described as home cooking and comfort food. The staff makes the effort for dietary restrictions such as allergies or specific requirements from a doctor.

In 1998, Kinnic Falls also purchased an eight-bed sober house, the Gerber House, where clients can benefit from extra time in a semi-structured environment for up to six months.

Rules and Regulations

Kinnic Falls bases its program on the principles of AA/NA with an emphasis on personal honesty and responsibility. It is designed very specifically for male individuals, 18 and older, who have first completed treatment at an inpatient facility and desire supportive rehabilitation services to achieve long-term sobriety. Certified counselors guide clients through a personalized program that includes individual and group therapy as well as assistance with psychological, spiritual, vocational and educational issues. The staff also welcomes and treats clients who have co-occurring disorders. Residents generally attend the substance abuse and alcohol addiction treatment programs for 90 days with an optional extension of six months at the nearby sober house, The Gerber House.

While Kinnic Falls focuses on the disease model of addiction, it does not expect clients to embrace it. Clients are able to attend other programming besides the 12-step program; the main idea is that they receive peer support of some kind. Clients are able to receive two one-hour individual sessions per week or more if they request it. They must attend four mandatory groups during the week and if they have a day job, they must be there for evening meetings. The group sessions include a mental health group, a relapse prevention group, a psychoeducation group, among many others.

When a client attends Kinnic Falls, he must use the “buddy system” for the first seven days. The client is not allowed to leave the facility during this time unless accompanied by a “buddy” who has been at the premises for at least seven days. After, clients are able to leave the facility as they wish, but are expected to attend all group meetings unless a pre-approved absence has been determined by the staff. Personal cell phones, tablets and e-readers are permitted but they may only be used in resident rooms, entry ways or outside of the building. Visitors are allowed but only permitted between 8am and 10pm daily, except during group time.

Kinnic Falls has four full-time substance abuse counselors, with one having a mental health credential. It has several other part time administrative staff, an operations manager, a driver, an administrative assistant, and four to five chemical dependency technicians that help cover the facility.

Extras

Guidance for matters such as relationship-building, homelessness and multiple addictions is offered while focusing on sustained recovery during this stage where clients are vulnerable to relapse.

In Summary

Kinnic Falls Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services Inc. is an affordable transitional care facility that supports recovering males 18 and older who are looking for a safe and drug free environment to get back on their feet.
