penfield christian homesThe Basics

Established in 1979, Penfield Christian Homes has four recovery campuses in Georgia, men’s facilities in Union Point, Lafayette, and Alapaha and a women’s program outside of Lavonia. The programs offer residential substance abuse treatment for adults. Penfield is a faith-based, non-profit program. As such, those accepted in must have their pastor or member of their church pray for them while in recovery, and commit to follow-up prayers after their release.

Accommodations and Food

The residential programs are six weeks of intensive treatment, though clients can stay longer if needed. The men’s campuses can accommodate 42 residents in Union Point, 30 in LaFayette and 30 in Alapaha. All rooms are set up for two-person occupancy with twin beds. The women’s program near Lavonia has been in operation since 1999, and provides treatment for 12 at a time. In each of the facilities, there are common rooms furnished with desks and tables for study and written assignments. Free time is devoted to reflection, prayer, community fellowship and exercise. All meals are prepared on-site and served cafeteria style, with menus ranging from pasta and meat dishes to salads, pizza and vegetables.

Phone calls are permitted after the first two weeks of residence, and visitation after the first three. Pastors are exempt from these stipulations and no pets are allowed. Men and women are asked to bring their medications, Bibles, AA and NA books, spiral notebook, pens and highlighters, seasonally-appropriate clothing, swim trunks, one collared shirt for church, toiletries and their own linens. Cologne, mouthwash, and roll-your-own cigarettes are not allowed. Clients are also instructed not to bring personal electronic devices, musical instruments or jewelry. Haircuts must be trim and clothes must be presentable.

Treatment and Staff

Prospective residents are interviewed by phone before admission and must agree to participate in all parts of the program. When applying, each client submits a disclosure statement of their mental, physical and emotional state, a document listing their medications when applicable and negative tuberculosis and syphilis tests. Detox must be completed before beginning the program. Pending legal issues must be adjudicated prior to admission, or postponed until after treatment.

Recovery at Penfield consists of individual and group counseling, bible study and devotions, drug and alcohol education sessions, family therapy, relapse prevention and spiritual guidance. Clients also participate in daily AA and NA meetings (usually in the evenings), Overcomers Outreach and Celebrate Recovery meetings. Regular church attendance is part of the program as well.

Though each location has its own team, the staff is comprised of 22 CSACs, with psychologists available as well. The staff-to-client ratio ranges from one-to-one to one-to-four depending on group size, with slightly fewer on-site staff on the weekends.

Extras

Family members may visit and dine with their loved ones for the noon meal on Saturdays and Sundays. Family education day is Sunday, combined with worship and prayer. An outdoor volleyball and indoor basketball court are available at the Union Point campus, which also boasts a lake on its grounds.

In Summary

Penfield Christian Homes has offered recovery to men and women since 1979. While this is obviously not a good choice for those who aren’t comfortable with a Christian program, each year Penfield helps more than 600 people find recovery. Through a balance of counseling, spirituality and education, their faith-based recovery programs are geared towards those seeking sobriety and to renew their personal faith.
