The Basics
Lucy and David Brown are married intervention specialists and both Board Registered Interventionists (BRI). The Browns are the owners of Avenues to Recovery Inc. located in the Kansas City suburb of Olathe, Kansas. They offer intervention services, as well as sober companionship, recovery monitoring and coaching services to clients all over the world.
The Background
Lucy Brown started her career in the recovery field after beginning her own sobriety in 1980, and opened Avenues to Recovery in 2003. In her 25 years in the field she has done over 150 interventions. British-born David Brown came to the states in 1974 and began his career as an engineer. Then, in 1982 he started working with his wife as an interventionist after he found sobriety himself. To date he has participated in over 200 interventions. In addition to intervention services, both Lucy and David offer outpatient counseling services for those who are struggling with addiction.
The Approach
The process of the intervention begins with either a phone or face-to-face interview with the family members of the clients, and a personalized intervention plan is put into place. The specialist works closely with the loved ones to provide them with a specific and detailed set of instructions about how the intervention will proceed.
Lucy trained in the Daring Way approach, which was created by Dr. Brene Brown. This method is designed to help clients feel free from shame and guilt, which is often the catalyst for their addiction in the first place, and is for individuals, groups, couples and the work place. The basic idea behind this approach is to ensure that the client knows they are loved and don’t feel attacked, don’t have an ultimatum and are treated with the utmost respect. Depending on the needs to the individual, a residential facility is chosen and the specialist escorts them to treatment. The clients and interventionist maintain communication throughout their stay in the facility, and after they leave and return back to their communities may participate in recovery coaching, group or individual counseling.
Those who don’t wish to go to a residential program, due to personal or professional constraints, have the option of a sober companion, which provides 24 hour support to the client and their family members and friends, though transportation, introduction to support groups, like AA or Alanon. The services don’t end when the individual is out of treatment, and often times clients still communicate with Lucy and David for up to a year after.
