Kentfield CaliforniaThe Basics

Based out of Marin County, California, Tara Fields (PhD, Licensed-MFT) is an intervention professional, author and psychotherapist specializing in personal relationships. Fields is the author of the book The Love Fix: Repair and Restore Your Relationship Right Now. With her early training with Virginia Satir, Dr. Carl Whitaker and Dr. Salvador Manuchin, leaders in the field of family therapy, Fields’ original focus was on the diagnosis and treatment of borderline and narcissistic personality disorders. Currently, Fields treats individuals, couples and families suffering from a range of mental and behavioral health issues that affect the family system.

Fields also studied Mindfulness Meditation techniques through the Spirit Rock Meditation Center under the direction of Sylvia Boorstein, Rick Hansen and Dr. Jack Kornfield. Since 1998, she has also studied and practiced Vipassana meditation techniques and employs this training in guiding clients through their own spiritual recovery. Additionally, Fields has a certificate in Psychodrama and advanced training in the Gottman couples’ method from the Psychodrama Institute of Los Angeles.

The Background

Fields’ private practice of 28 years is located in the city of Kentfield where she primarily works with couples and individuals in private counseling sessions. However, moving between Los Angeles and the Bay Area in California, Fields assists a wide range of clients who struggle with relationships and process addictions. Her knowledge of working with addiction and eating disorders was acquired during her three-year internship at the Maple Center Community Health Clinic in Beverly Hills and she is also known for her appearance on Intervention.

Her work with substance abuse, addiction and eating disorders has also recently been popularized via her involvement with a variety of TV shows. She’s appeared on Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz and the Oprah Winfrey Show, as well as various cable news networks sharing her expertise with eating disorders. Fields is a frequent guest on talk-radio and is a published author of essays, advice columns in addition to her book. Additionally, she has been a keynote speaker, workshop facilitator and moderator for a range of organizations across the country.

The Approach

Fields’ primary methods of treatment are family systems, mindfulness techniques, CBT techniques and attachment theories. Her intervention practice focuses on treating the family as a whole and identifying the effects of substance abuse, avoiding labeling the primary client as a “problem.” Her intervention process includes both surprise interventions as well as agreed-to efforts.

Alleviating the stress of finding facilities, Fields and her team can arrange for detox and placement in a facility if needed. Fields maintains an ongoing relationship with clients, providing individual therapy at her private practice. Individuals with co-occurring disorders are provided with additional resources depending on their diagnosis.

Post-Intervention and Summary

Fields typically remains in contact with clients beyond the intervention period, helping them to stay on course with aftercare. Due to her focus on family systems modalities, Fields works intensively with the family unit making sure that they have support. Through family and one-on-one sessions, Fields ensures that her clients are well on their way to recovery. If the client relapses or discovers other difficulties during the recovery process, additional resources and referrals are provided.
