Colonial Park HouseThe Basics

Founded in 2011 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, by John R. Laus who has been clean and sober since 2006, Colonial Park House provides safe and structured gender-specific sober living houses for men and women in early recovery. Its belief is that a healthy sober living environment bridges the gap after clients leave a drug rehab, and prior to their reentering society. Laus is a certified recovery peer specialist, in both the states of Pennsylvania and Florida.

Accommodations and Amenities

Colonial Park House is comprised of a female-only house that has an eight-bed capacity, and a male-only six-unit Cape Cod style house that has an 18-bed capacity. The men’s house has a living room with eclectic furnishings, including comfortable couches and a flat screen TV. At both houses, clients are comfortable paired in furnished, double- occupancy rooms which include twin beds, dressers, night lamps, an old fashioned style desk and a chair, and windows which provide sunlight.

Clients are responsible for their own groceries, and meals are prepared in fully equipped kitchens, which include ample pantry space, designed for food storage. Amenities include Wi-Fi, cable TV and free washers and dryers. Each house has a live-in residential manager. While the women’s house manager has extensive experience managing a sober living home, the men’s house manager is also a certified recovery peer specialist. Smoking is permitted outside the homes, in designated areas.

Rules and Regulations

Colonial Park House prefers that clients have undergone primary care at a drug rehab, and have been clean and sober for a minimum of 30 days. Other clients are admitted on a case-by-case basis, and undergo a comprehensive assessment to ensure that Colonial Park House is an appropriate fit. Staff looks for individuals who express a strong willingness to work on their recovery, and who want to stay clean and sober above all else. A 90-day minimum length of stay is requested.

Upon arrival, clients are encouraged to attend 90 12-step meetings in 90 days, but are required to attend between three and four weekly AA/NA meetings. Clients, who are not too keen on the 12 steps, are encouraged to check out alternatives, including Celebrate Recovery and SMART Recovery. During the first two weeks, clients must look for work, enroll in school, or secure a volunteer position in the local community. Others are encouraged to attend an aftercare program, if appropriate. This is recommended so that clients are productive during the week, and are not left with idle time, which is often detrimental to recovery.

Other requirements include working the steps, getting a sponsor, attending the house meeting and maintaining basic rules, which include basic household chores. Random drug and alcohol testing is conducting. Residents who relapse are evicted immediately to ensure the safety of the entire household. The curfew is 11 pm seven days a week.

Extras

Colonial Park House is a member of National Association of Recovery Residences (NARR) and Pennsylvania Alliance of Recovery Residences (PARR).

In Summary

Colonial Park House looks for clients who really express a strong desire to work on their recovery, and will go out of their way to help them stay on the right path. CEO and founder Laus also believes that an esthetically beautiful environment boosts morale, and promotes a healthy and healing atmosphere. Colonial Park House is a wonderful option for clients seeking an East Coast sober living home.
