The Basics
Based in the small hamlet of Bel Air, Maryland and serving the residents of greater Harford County, Harford Counseling offers substance abuse care on an outpatient basis, as well as counseling services for youth and adolescents. Treatment is supported by a substantial family program that enables loved ones to participate in the recovery process.
Treatment and Staff
The majority of clients attending Harford Counseling’s substance abuse program are court-mandated as the result of a DWI/DUI infraction. After an initial evaluation session, a path of treatment is chosen to meet individual court requirements, typically consisting of either a 12- or 26-week program, depending on the severity of need and sentencing. There are no detox services offered at Harford Counseling, though clients in need of this care can be referred to a nearby accommodating facility.
Given that Harford Counseling is primarily a counseling facility that offers individual sessions, it does not offer an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for substance abuse. Clients are enrolled in a standard outpatient program which consists of group therapy scheduled once a week and individual therapy on an as-needed basis (typically once a week).
In order to accommodate each individual’s schedules, both day and evening sessions are available Monday through Friday and all sessions are led by the facility’s staff of LSWs. These sessions generally focus on a CBT model of treatment. Clients can also complement their weekly groups and individual therapy with alternative therapy groups and services including art therapy, EMDR and healing touch—an energy-based healing practice offered in private 15 to 60 minute sessions. Twelve-step recovery is a major component of the Harford Counseling program, with weekly meetings held on-site and an emphasis placed on these principles during the group sessions.
While there is no official dual diagnosis program offered at Harford Counseling, clients can discuss co-occurring disorders during their individual sessions. However, there is no psychiatrist on-staff, nor is medication management offered.
Most clients attending Harford Counseling’s outpatient program are there to meet the needs of a court mandate, which most complete in either the 12- or 26-week sessions. As a result, the facility offers no official aftercare program, though when deemed appropriate, clients can continue to attend group and individual sessions on an as-needed basis.
Extras
Clients can also expect a thorough family program, with family members encouraged to attend individual sessions. In addition to these services for adults, the facility also offers a substance abuse program for youth and adolescents which mirrors the adult services and also includes an emphasis on trauma-informed care and play therapy.
Given that Harford Counseling’s substance abuse services are largely oriented around court requirements, clients can expect additional services that dovetail with these needs, including drug screens and case management services, offering regular updates and progress reports to clients’ lawyers, probation officers and the Court.
In Summary
Harford Counseling is primarily a counseling center that offers a variety of outpatient services for adults, families and adolescents. Those in need of intensive substance abuse care may be better served at a facility that offers inpatient treatment, a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or even an IOP. But for those needing to meet a court requirement with a program tailored to their individual needs that incorporates 12-step recovery, Harford Counseling may be a perfect fit.
