The Basics
Established in 1976 and based in Camden, the Hispanic Family Center of Southern New Jersey is a community-oriented behavioral health facility offering substance abuse treatment on an outpatient basis. In addition to this program, it also offers mental health counseling, health education programs and services for seniors and adolescents.
Treatment and Staff
Hispanic Family Center of Southern New Jersey’s most comprehensive program for substance abuse is its Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), which consists of three-hour group therapy three times a week and individual therapy, typically on a monthly basis. While most group therapy is held from 9 to 12 pm daily, there are evening sessions offered on Mondays and Thursdays. The facility is not particularly 12-step oriented, but clients can receive information about local AA/NA meetings. The facility aims to keep its groups small, with no more than 12 clients in a group at time. There are bi-lingual group and individual sessions available and the facility also offers a special therapeutic track for women to have their own group sessions.
Typically, the program at Hispanic Family Center of Southern New Jersey lasts a total of seven months, with clients deescalating their care over the course of this period, typically ending with group therapy once a month and individual therapy on an as-needed basis. Because clients are typically a mix of court-mandated and self-referring, this length of program can vary to meet court requirements and personal progress.
These sessions are all led by LADCs and since the facility also offers a comprehensive mental health program, clients can expect a dual diagnosis care component to their treatment. This includes visits with an on-staff psychiatrist and medication management, as well as special group sessions that address co-occurring disorders.
Extras
Family involvement is a major component to the Hispanic Family Center of New Jersey program and clients can expect a family program that encourages the familial unit to attend individual therapy. Aftercare is offered in the form of a continuing care program of group and individual sessions that focus on relapse prevention.
As previously mentioned, the Hispanic Family Center of Southern New Jersey offers a plethora of other programs for clients to complement its substance abuse treatment. These include special sessions dedicated to domestic violence, ESL courses, HIV/AIDS education and outreach, and the Girls Exercising Real Life Skills (GERLS) program, a gender-specific treatment track for adolescents.
In Summary
As a long running community-oriented organization, Hispanic Family Center of Southern New Jersey emphasizes a multi-cultural approach to providing substance abuse care. Clients can expect a comprehensive IOP, with bi-lingual and gender-specific tracks, as well as a full dual diagnosis program and aftercare. Clients can also tailor their program to meet court requirements and complement their program with the facility’s variety of specific therapy session and educational classes.
