The Basics

Founded by addictions specialist William P. Duke in 2007 in Jacksonville, Florida, Awakening Recovery Center offers comprehensive outpatient and Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) for adults suffering from chemical dependency. Additionally, they feature an executive IOP for high-profile professionals seeking discreet treatment services. Their belief is that an evidence-based program in conjunction with a substantial dose of support group meetings contributes to a healthy foundation of lasting recovery.

Treatment and Staff

Prior to treatment, clients undergo a comprehensive bio-psycho-social assessment with an intake counselor to develop an individualized treatment plan. Additionally, counselors incorporate the Addiction Severity Index (ASI) to determine the appropriate level of care.

IOP treatment length is between six and eight weeks. Weekly treatment includes three group sessions and two individual sessions. Medication management for those with co-occurring psychiatric conditions is available, if necessary. At Awakening Recovery Center, several evidence-based practices, specifically DBT, Motivational Enhancement Therapy (MET) and CBT are used during group and individual therapy. Groups focus on developing mindfulness and on learning distress tolerance skills, which include deep breathing, radical acceptance and self-soothing tools. Radical acceptance is when the client learns to accept situations just as they are in any given moment.

Group topics include emotion regulation, relapse prevention, stress management, understanding triggers, self-acceptance, goal setting, intro to 12-step groups and the neurobiological imbalances caused by addiction. Gender specific groups, including a women’s issues group, are provided. While not mandated, clients are encouraged to attend recovery support groups including Celebrate Recovery, SMART Recovery and 12-step meetings. Groups range between six and eight clients.

The weekly outpatient track includes two individual sessions and a minimum of one group therapy. The protocol parallels IOP but is less time intensive, and treatment length varies per client’s needs. The executive program includes inconspicuous counseling sessions, designed to protect clients’ identities and their privacy. The small staff includes a medical doctor/addiction medicine physician, Master’s-level primary therapist and an office manager.

Extras

At Awakening Recovery Center, their holistic therapy includes amino acid therapy or amino acid supplements, which are believed to help regulate moods.

A DUI Treatment program is provided for court-ordered clients, and includes a unique boating under the influence program.
