Pacific Palms RecoveryThe Basics

Founded in 2010 in Dana Point, California by husband and wife team Amy Christle and Ryan Schrier, Pacific Palms Recovery provides outpatient substance abuse treatment services for men and women. Amy, who is also the founder and CEO of Donna’s House and Ryan both have long-term sobriety. Amy is a certified drug addiction therapist, and Ryan is the rehab’s intake director. Typically, clients reside at a gender-specific sober living residence provided by Donna’s House during treatment. Pacific Palms Recovery recently relocated to a San Clemente address.

Treatment and Staff

Most clients have undergone 30 days of primary care at a drug rehab. Treatment length is typically long-term, and lasts up to a year. On a weekly basis, the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) is a 30-hour commitment, from 9:30 am to 3 pm Mondays through Fridays, and as clients progress in their recovery, they step down to 18 hours of weekly treatment which is held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays.

Pacific Palms Recovery utilizes evidence-based modalities, as well as 12-step approach. Treatment includes meditation, group and individual therapy, life skills training and family therapy (on Sundays).  Attendance at two 12-step meetings is required Mondays through Fridays, and at least one meeting on the weekends. SMART Recovery is also an option for clients seeking alternatives to AA/NA. Other weekly requirements include a minimum of meeting with a sponsor at least once, making a daily phone call to sponsor, continued attendance at regular 12-step meetings, and completion of a weekly 15 page written assignment on Relapse Prevention.

After clients step down to an 18-hour weekly track, treatment parallels that of the IOP, with the addition of participation in a job search program for those who need to find work. Employed clients must provide proof of working at least a minimum of 25 hours per week. Group topics include relapse prevention, emotional sobriety, and 12-step journaling, relapse warning signs, building self-confidence, goal setting, listening and dealing with emotions in recovery. Groups range in size, anywhere between five and six clients, as well as between 25 and 30, but staff tries to keep the numbers small.

Besides the Schriers, the small staff includes a Doctorate-level consulting psychologist/psychotherapist, consulting psychiatrist, program director who is a CADC, medical director, psychiatric nurse practitioner, Master’s-level psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner and yoga instructor.

Extras

Weekly aftercare treatment consists of individual therapy.

The family education program provides an educational outlook on addiction and introduces 12-step and Alanon Recovery principles. The program consists of educational topics and group therapy. Topics include the disease concept, addiction as a family disease, the physical and behavioral effects of addiction, communication skills, enabling, family dynamics, expectations, establishing boundaries and detaching with love.

In Summary

With the Schriers at the helm, Pacific Palms Recovery provides a comprehensive outpatient treatment approach for men and women who are new to recovery. Staff boasts impressive credentials, and while Pacific Palms Recovery is a smaller facility, clients are in great hands here, plus being close to the beach is an added benefit to any client’s recovery program.
