The Basics
David Rothenberg founded Fortune Society in 1967 after being inspired to help create a world where those coming out of prison can change their lives and positively contribute to society. Since then, Fortune has implemented a comprehensive model of services that includes treatment for substance abuse and mental health issues in its State-licensed outpatient facilities. Around 4,500 men and women are treated annually by Fortune across three New York City-area locations. The main Fortune Society office is in Long Island City and two other facilities are in west Harlem.
Treatment and Staff
All new clients undergo a standardized psychosocial evaluation that determines the appropriate level of care, as well as vocational and educational aptitude. No appointment is necessary at the Long Island location and interested parties are encouraged to drop into the headquarters for more information. The outpatient program is recommended for those that need support after leaving incarceration, probationers, parolees and ex-offenders, as well as those seeking an alternative to incarceration. All clients must be over 16 years of age.
All participants undergo random drug tests and urinalysis screening, while treatment length and intensity is determined by their legal requirements. Individualized treatment plans include orientation, individual and group counseling, with additional services tailored to each client. Group sessions may occur three or four days a week, with individual counseling weekly, or as needed. Facilitated by counselors with various cultural backgrounds, and life experiences similar to the client’s, groups focus on abstinence and coping techniques. Staff aims to treat the underlying emotional and mental challenges clients face while teaching relapse prevention strategies.
Those with co-occurring disorders are supported through tailored counseling sessions as well as medication management, and are overseen my medical staff at all Fortune locations. The centers are open weekdays, from 8 am to 8 pm Monday to Thursday and 8 am to 5 pm Friday.
Extras
In addition to counseling, clients can participate in career development and education classes to help create new opportunities. Anger management and parenting classes are also available for clients that deal with those particular issues.
Discharge planning is included for all clients, with aftercare consisting of check-ins with clients and a gradual decrease in counseling sessions. Aftercare services are offered for life, meaning clients can always return to seek help with future challenges. Metro cards are provided for low-income clients, while Fortune staff assists the uninsured with applying for Medicaid.
In Summary
Fortune Society provides many essential services for an often-underserved population. In terms of substance abuse, the outpatient program is great as it allows clients to find support and community from their peers. The lifetime aftercare program shows Fortune truly cares about their clients’ future lives.
