The Basics
Founded in 2004 in Phoenix, Arizona, AAA Turning Point provides a family-style sober living community for newly clean and sober men and women with co-occurring disorders. A majority of clients are referrals from Community Bridges, Inc., a nearby drug rehab that offers detox, inpatient and outpatient substance abuse and addiction treatment services throughout 14 communities in Arizona.
Accommodations and Amenities
AAA Turning Point has three sober living homes. There are two apartment buildings that house 24 men and 24 women in fully furnished, gender-specific two bedroom apartments. While the apartment complexes have the capacity to house eight clients in each two-bedroom apartment, efforts are made to keep no more than six residents per unit. Clients sleep three or four to a room in bunk beds, dressers and ample storage space. The apartments include fully equipped kitchens. There is also a gender-specific transitional living home that accommodates three women who have completed the six-month inpatient program.
All cooking utensils are provided. Clients are responsible for their own groceries and meal preparation. Staff helps qualifying clients apply for food stamps which are used for the purchase of food. All accommodations include laundry rooms, Cable TV and 14 on-site weekly 12-step meetings that are open to the public. Clients are in close proximity to ample job opportunities and public transportation. On-site staff provides around-the-clock support.
Rules and Regulations
Potential clients must have completed detox and not be receiving Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), including suboxone, though those requiring medication management for co-occurring disorders are admitted. A six-month minimum length of stay is required. Clients receiving disability benefits for mental health issues are also admitted, provided that they are capable of becoming financially accountable.
Upon arrival, residents receive a list of available sponsors and are given 48 hours to acquire a sponsor and begin work towards completing the steps, meeting with their sponsor once a week. Other requirements include attendance of daily 12-step meetings, enrollment in an outpatient program (if appropriate), performance of household chores and maintenance of regular employment. Additionally, since some clients are admitted on a promise-to-pay basis, they have five days to obtain employment. AAA Turning Point works closely with a local telemarketing company which provides employment to appropriate clients.
At AAA Turning Point, there is a zero tolerance policy regarding fraternization between men and women, as well as any drug and/or alcohol use. Random drug and alcohol testing is conducted. Relapsed residents are usually referred to Community Bridges, where they undergo detox before being re-admitted to AAA Turning Point.
Clients progress through four phases while living at AAA Turning Point. During phase one, the curfew is between 4 and 7 pm seven days a week. When employment is acquired, the curfew moves to 9 pm seven days a week. During phase two, the curfew is 9 pm Sundays through Thursdays, and 11 pm Fridays and Saturdays. Phases three and four curfews parallel the second phase. Duration of each phase is dependant upon each client’s individual progress.
Extras
In addition to housing, AAA Turning Points also offers couples placement services which provides men and women opportunities to mend relationships with their loved ones.
In Summary
AAA Turning Point is an affordable sober living option for men and women who are ready to begin the transition from primary treatment to independent living. In addition to living in a structured environment and meeting responsibilites, clients are immersed in a supportive community with access to nearby outpatient services and daily 12-step meetings.
