Eureka CaliforniaThe Basics

Located in Eureka, California Healthy Moms is a division of the Humboldt County Department of Health and Human Services that provides outpatient substance abuse treatment for mothers. Through this program, pregnant women and those with children under six years old can participate in a general outpatient or Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), aftercare and have access to mental health services. The programs are designed to offer support, ultimately encouraging mothers to lead healthy, productive lives.

Treatment and Staff

As per California regulations, intravenous drug users and pregnant women are given priority for treatment, though many other clients are also admitted. Clients are assessed for co-occurring disorders, and women with serious mental or medical concerns are cared for at other DHHS divisions. Individual and family counseling is offered as needed for dual diagnosis support in addition to substance abuse treatment, providing substance abuse is the primary diagnosis. Treatment length varies according to individual needs, but typically ranges from six to 12 weeks.

Clients in the outpatient program meet twice a week for group therapy and psychoeducation with LCSWs. Appropriate for those in the early stages of recovery, initial focus is placed on stabilizing life circumstances. Additionally, clients receive ongoing evaluation and case management, which includes referrals to parenting, housing, legal, medical and mental health resources.

The IOP meets four days a week and clients participate in group therapy, psychoeducation and a variety of classes that explore spirituality and the effects of substance abuse on the family. After establishing a firm foundation for physical recovery, clients learn about emotional recovery, relapse prevention techniques, healthy communication methods and dealing with codependency. Weekly parenting classes help mothers develop appropriate discipline and communication skills, while workshops on child and mental health are also offered. The program requires clients utilize the childcare services to practice healthy interactions with their children. Family and individual counseling is available as needed.

Extras

The aftercare program requires women attend two group sessions a week, with an additional optional process group available. These sessions help women in the transition to sober lives, providing essential support.

On-site childcare is provided for kids less than six years and additional pediatric services can be easily accessed. Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) is also offered on-site and is a great way for parents to improve relationship skills and discipline strategies.

In Summary

Healthy Moms provides great outpatient programs tailored to suit mothers and pregnant women. The range of childcare services and specific therapies help clients establish not only their own recovery, but also themselves as healthy parents. This is a great option for women with children who are seeking affordable outpatient care.
