Choice House

The Basics

Choice House was founded in 2012 by CADC Mara Lehnert, who worked at the Harmony Foundation substance abuse treatment facility for 10 years. Located about 20 miles north of Denver in picturesque old-town Louisville, Colorado, Choice House is a 12-step based, sober living home for men. Choice House is designed for clients coming out of a inpatient treatment and asks its clients make a minimum 90 day commitment.

Accommodations and Amenities

Choice provides a total of 15 private, single bedrooms. The Choice units are recently remodeled, fully furnished and move-in ready. Linens and bedding are provided, as are cable TV, Internet and telephone landlines which, like all utilities, are included in the program cost.

New clients receive a welcome basket that includes a $100 King Soopers food stipend, upon move in.  All residents are responsible for buying their own groceries, as well as preparing their own food, after that initial boost. Pooling resources for group shopping trips and family-style dinners is encouraged, but not expected.

Rules and Regulations

Choice clients undergo daily breathalyzer tests and frequent random urinalyses. There is a zero-tolerance policy for positive tests and an enforced curfew of 10 pm on weekdays and 11 pm on weekends. Weekly on-site process groups are facilitated by Choice’s executive and clinical directors and a counselor. Choice also offers optional bi-weekly art therapy groups.

Meanwhile, clients are also expected to attend the weekly house meetings and a weekly one-on-one session with the clinical director to whom residents always have 24/7 phone access. They are also required to attend a minimum of six AA/NA meetings in the outside community per week. Residents must begin working, volunteering, or attending school within the first two to three weeks of their stay.

Choice’s on-site, live-in house manager, who resides in his own attached apartment, is available to clients 24/7.

Extras

Choice also provides clients with membership to a nearby YMCA fitness center, while the on-site recreation center offers another space for fitness upkeep and community gathering. Choice even has a spiritual meditation room for clients’ solo or group use. Choice also offers clients resume assistance and job coaching.

In Summary

Choice House requires a three month commitment from it prospective clients, so those who want a more flexible living situation should look elsewhere. The cost of the minimum stay at Choice $8,970 including a $1,000 “bed deposit” in order to guarantee a spot. While that deposit is refunded at end of 90 days, the cost of staying at Choice is still substantial. Additionally, the first three months’ payment is required to be paid within 30 days of residency. However, for those who can afford those costs and who want a supportive, semi-therapeutic environment in early sobriety, Choice House may be the right choice.
