The Basics
Founded in 1967, the JFK Medical Center is one of New Jersey’s largest healthcare facilities serving the communities of Middlesex, Union and Somerset Counties. The facility’s JFK Center for Behavioral Health on the main hospital campus in Edison offers substance abuse and mental health treatment services on an outpatient basis. Licensed by the New Jersey Department of Human Services and the Division of Addiction Services and reviewed independently by the Joint Commission, JFK Center for Behavioral Health has offered recovery care services for over 25 years.
Treatment and Staff
The majority of clients participating in JFK Center for Behavioral Health’s program are self-referred though the facility does have an agreement with Middlesex and Union County’s Intoxicated Drivers Resource Center (IDRC) for those in need of court-mandated assessments and treatment. There are no detox services offered, though clients in need can be referred to accommodating facilities nearby.
The most comprehensive program offered at the JFK Center for Behavioral Health is its Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) which consists of three group therapy sessions a week for three hours at a time. Individual therapy is also available though the frequency varies on a case-by-case basis. These sessions are primarily led by LADCs though the facility also employs LSWs, licensed psychologists and a board certified psychiatrist. All treatment sessions are held between 8 am to 9 pm Monday through Thursday and 9 am to 4 pm on Fridays. Clients can select a program that accommodates their daily schedule. While on-site meetings are not available, 12-step recovery is encouraged outside of the program. There are also special weekly group sessions devoted to anger management and relapse prevention.
JFK Center for Behavioral Health has separate outpatient programs dedicated solely to mental health. As a result, dual diagnosis support is readily available, including individual sessions with a staff psychiatrist and medication management. The facility also offers a family program where family members and spouses can attend individual therapy as needed. As treatment is individualized, programs have no official duration.
Extras
Following IOP, aftercare is also available with clients attending group sessions indefinitely long after their initial treatment period concludes. As a complement to its outpatient services, the JFK Center for Behavioral Health also provides weekly smoking cessation sessions led by an on-staff specialist.
In Summary
The JFK Medical Center’s Center for Behavioral Health delivers a solid IOP option with strong dual-diagnosis support, as well as 12-step recovery and extensive aftercare. Given its expansive resources and long history, JFK Center for Behavioral Health is an established community resource for a range of mental health and addiction programs.
