The Basics
Located in Breckenridge Minnesota, which is on the western side of the state, about 5o miles from Fargo, North Dakota, Valley Lake Boys Home opened in 1975. This residential substance abuse treatment facility is specifically for boys between the ages of 12 and 18. Services are available to adolescents who are court ordered or referred through social services. The Valley-Lake Boy’s Home is a member of the Minnesota Council of Child Care Agencies (MCCCA).
Accommodations and Food
Valley Lake Boys Home is set on a sprawling campus, with several buildings. The dorm can house up to 14 boys at a time, each in their own single bedrooms with all bedding and toiletries provided. Nutritious meals are served three times a day in the cafeteria and healthy snacks are available as well.
Treatment and Staff
Valley Lake Boys Home typically offers a 90-day program but does also provide a short-term option of 30-day treatment. Valley Lake Boys Home’s modality is similar to 12-step but adapted for adolescent clients. A CBT model in addition to a point-based reward/punishment system is used to enforce positive behavior in clients. In order to completed the program, clients have to earn at least 1,500 points. Clients begin each day with ten points. Exhibiting positive behavior earn points while negative, disruptive or rule breaking behavior causes clients to lose points and privileges.
As far as treatment goes, clients do nightly group therapy during the week on topics from decision-making to interpersonal skills. Each client is assigned a case manager with whom individual sessions are held as needed, at a minimum of once a week. Clients are encouraged to have regular calls, letters, and visits with parents which take place on Sunday afternoons. Those clients with acceptable behavior earn bi-weekly weekend home visits.
Medical services for clients are offered by Breckenridge area physicians and the nearby St. Francis Medical Center. The boys also attend school at Breckenridge Middle School during the day and can work toward getting their GED. Summer sessions are also available.
Valley Lake Boys Home also offers an outpatient track for local boys. Clients come in for one hour every day, Mondays through Fridays, to attend group for a total of 10 weeks. The program is called CARE (Community Addiction Recovery Enterprise).
Valley Lake Boys Home employs CADCs, two case managers as well as a LCSW.
Extras
The daily schedule includes structured and supervised recreation time. The recreation building provides a year round indoor play area. Seasonal outdoor activites are also enjoyed. Various activities include basketball, sports events, roller blading, volleyball, swimming, softball, arts and crafts, football and weight lifting.
In Summary
Valley Lake Boys Home is on its 40th year of operation. Thus Valley Lake Boys Home is accessible to all those who need its services, as long as they get the appropriate referral.
