The Basics
Pathways to Peace offers two highly structured sober living homes—one for men and one for women—in the historic district of West Palm Beach, Florida. While each facility offers condo-like living only minutes from the Atlantic Ocean, the environment is not meant to replicate a vacation destination. Rather, the emphasis is on giving recently sober individuals a chance to transition back to everyday life with the discipline and tools they will need to maintain long-term sobriety. To do this, Pathways subscribes to the philosophy that a successful and balanced recovery addresses emotional, spiritual, physical and mental health.
Accommodations and Amenities
Both Pathways to Peace facilities—which are a 15-minute drive from each other—include two- and four-person, brightly painted and decorated, fully-furnished residences. There are 44 units at the men’s house and 10 at the women’s building. The two-person apartments feature one bedroom/one bathroom each and the four-person units offer two bedrooms and one shared bathroom.
Each suite comes with a fully-stocked kitchen, new pillow-top mattresses and fresh linens and towels. Amenities include high speed, wireless Internet and flat screen TVs. There are coin-operated washers and dryers on the property but not in the units.
Rules and Regulations
Pathways is extremely structured and its programs are geared toward people coming out of a 30-day treatment program. A buddy accountability system is enforced for the first month and there is regular, mandatory drug and alcohol testing every week.
Residents are required to be part of an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) in addition to participating in family therapy and addiction and co-dependency education. Supervised on-site 12-step meetings and daily off-site 12-step meetings are also required.
A 10:30 pm curfew is imposed when a client first arrives at the facility and is eventually extended to 11 pm. House managers are on-site 24/7.
Residents are required to commit to a lease for a minimum of three to six months, find a job and be willing to volunteer when not working or while seeking employment.
Extras
Additional services, which are provided off-site by outside resources, include dual diagnosis evaluation and treatment; hypnotherapy and EMDR therapy; gender-specific and Christian-based recovery groups; client-centered psychotherapy; life coaching; job counseling and other guidance.
Local colleges, performing arts and entertainment venues, shopping malls and libraries are located near both the men and women’s residences. Transportation is available to these places and to grocery stores as well as selected 12-step meetings. Residents also take part in outings to water parks, beach barbecues and more.
In Summary
The emphasis on accountability makes Pathways to Peace a good fit for those seeking more structure after treatment along with the tools necessary to go out into the world with a solid foundation of sobriety. And though the location near the beach in posh West Palm Beach may suggest a hefty price tag, this facility is moderately priced and probably affordable for most prospective clients.
