The Basics
Located in Cambridge, Maryland, Dorchester County Addictions Program provides adults and adolescents outpatient treatment programs for substance abuse. Services include comprehensive assessments and referrals as well as educational and therapeutic support. Adults are offered three levels of care all of which include group and individual therapy sessions while adolescent treatment is limited to one-on-one sessions. Detox is also available for those in need.
Treatment and Staff
Treatment at Dorchester County Addictions Program begins with a thorough assessment. From this intake session, clients are placed in the proper level of care depending on their needs. Suboxone treatment is available for those struggling with opiate withdrawals.
There are three outpatient programs for adults seeking treatment and enrollment is determined by each client’s acuity. The lowest intensity track is basic Substance Abuse Program (SAP) which meets for group therapy once a week for 13 to 26 weeks. Groups are an hour in duration and scheduled on Tuesdays at 6 pm and Wednesdays at 10 am. Clients also schedule individual sessions once every 90 days. In addition to therapy, all participants must also attend at least six AA/NA off-site meetings throughout the course of treatment.
The next level of care requires participation in two group sessions and two AA/NA meetings a week, as well as one individual session every 30 days. The duration of this second level of treatment is typically 26 weeks. Groups are available in the mornings on Mondays and Thursdays from 10 to 11 am, or in the evenings from 6 to 7 pm.
The final and most intensive option is the Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) which meets on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays in both the mornings and evenings. Morning group sessions run from 9:30 am to 12:45 pm while evening groups go from 5:30 to 7:45 pm. Individual sessions are scheduled bi-weekly and daily AA/NA attendance is required. During group sessions, therapists use evidence-based modalities and 12-step principles to discuss relapse prevention, the disease of addiction and mental health disorders.
Aside from the adult programs, adolescent services are scheduled on an individual basis as needed. Though each adolescent’s plan varies, sessions are typically held once or twice a week for 30- to 60-minutes at a time. There are currently no adolescent peer groups offered.
Staff at Dorchester County Addictions Program include LADCs, LCSWs and LPCs who use evidence-based techniques including CBT and DBT.
Extras
Adolescents who are considered high risk are provided services by counselors at middle schools and high schools. In-school programs include counseling, interventions and substance abuse education.
Drug and Alcohol Recovery Training (DART) is also available for men and women and held at the Dorchester County Detention Center. DART uses the Alcohol Severity Index and provides HIV/AIDS education, individual and group therapy as well as aftercare. Aftercare consists of eight group sessions which focus on relapse prevention as well as regular attendance of AA/NA meetings. A DWI Education program for court-ordered clients is also available, meeting for two hours at a time over the course of six weeks.
A complimentary family program takes place every second Thursday of the month. This track is open to all clients and their families, friends and loved ones. Families are invited to enjoy snacks and refreshments provided by the facility while learning about the effects of addiction and tools for coping.
Prenatal assessments for women struggling with addiction are held on-site as well, with referrals to outside facilities available when necessary. In those cases, women are typically referred to Center for Clean Start, an IOP for pregnant women struggling with chemical dependency.
Adult Drug Court services for repeat offenders are also provided. These include participation in a treatment program in exchange for dismal of original court charges. Finally, Dorchester County Addictions Program also has a Temporary Cash Assistance program which first screens individuals for substance abuse dependency. Those who qualify are offered treatment on a sliding fee scale.
In Summary
Overall, Dorchester County Addictions Program provides outpatient treatment for adults and adolescents with a range of intensities. While services for adults are more extensive with structured programs available, adolescents still have access to one-on-one care. In addition to its more structured programs, the facility also offers a wide range of supplemental services at an affordable price. In all, Dorchester County Addictions Program is a solid community resource for those struggling with substance abuse issues.
