The Basics

Based in St. Louis, Missouri, Christian Hospital Recovery Center is the behavioral health wing of Christian Hospital, a large St. Louis healthcare institution founded in 1903. The facility offers outpatient chemical dependency and psychiatric programs with the option to combine programs to create a specialized track with dual diagnosis support.

Treatment and Staff

Because Christian Hospital Recovery Center shares a campus with the greater Christian Hospital network, clients also have access to a medical detox prior to beginning outpatient treatment. This process typically lasts three to five days with 24/7 nursing supervision and regular visits with a medical doctor. Clients are housed in a special wing of the facility in traditional hospital rooms.

Upon discharge, clients can begin treatment after an initial evaluation that determines the intensity of treatment. The facility offers both Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP) and standard outpatient tracks for both chemical dependency and mental health.

The Christian Hospital Recovery Center’s outpatient program is largely comprised of group therapy sessions which meet every weekday from 9 am to noon, all led by LADCs. These groups typically last 50 minutes. There are also 50-minute educational sessions incorporated into the weekly program.

The facility strongly encourages 12-step recovery principles and group sessions are influenced by these methods. Evening groups are also available to accommodate clients’ work schedules. Individual therapy is available as well though this is not a primary feature of the program. Clients typically have one initial individual session in the beginning of treatment and a final session before their discharge. Those in need of a more intensive program are referred to a staff psychiatrist who offers weekly sessions, medication management and regular visits to the facility. There is also a nurse on staff available for weekly visits as well.

The chemical dependency and mental health programs at Christian Hospital Recovery Center are similarly structured. The mental health program is comprised of group therapy sessions weekdays from 9 am to noon. These sessions are led by an LSW and, as with the substance abuse program, clients can schedule visits with the on-staff psychiatrist. The psychiatric program also offers a family program typically once during a client’s treatment, wherein family members can join a specially tailored group session.

While each client’s length of stay varies depending on their individual needs, typical stays in the chemical dependency program last three to four weeks.

Extras

For those who complete primary care, aftercare is provided as well. Clients can attend a group session every Wednesday from 1 to 2 pm while those in the psychiatric program attend groups Wednesdays from 3 to 4 pm. Aftercare services are provided at no additional cost.

In addition to its chemical dependency and psychiatric programs, the Christian Hospital Recovery Center also offers the KEY program designed for clients between the ages of 18 to 60 suffering from mental illness that has led to chronic hospitalization. The program meets weekdays from 10 am 1:30 pm and offers group therapy, educational sessions and monthly visits with a staff psychiatrist.
