The Basics
Double A Safe House was founded in 2002 Perry, Ohio, which is about 30 miles from Cleveland on the banks of Lake Erie. The success of this men’s only sober living facility began what is now known as Transitions Addiction Treatment. In addition to the house, Transitions runs a recovery gift shop and will soon be offering outpatient substance abuse treatment.
Accommodations and Amenities
The quaint cottage-style house is nestled on 10 acres that includes a barn, trees and a landscaped garden with sunflowers, a birdbath and greenery. The home holds up to ten men at different stages in recovery. Both double-occupancy and single rooms are provided.
Amenities include all utilities, and cable, as well as fuel oil for heat during the winter. There is a coin operated washer and dryer, and a pay phone on the premises. Clients are allowed use of window fans during the summer. While Double A Safe House prefers that clients don’t use heaters and air conditioners, they are allowed. The additional cost for using those appliances is $10 extra per week. Double A Safe House provides ample parking, but residents are asked not to park in the driveway. Smoking is permitted in designated outside areas.
Clients are responsible for their own food. They purchase groceries and prepare meals in a fully equipped kitchen.
Rules and Regulations
Prospective residents must have undergone detox or inpatient treatment. Typically, a new client submits an application, and then is interviewed by the program director and resident manager. Should the interview go well, they are invited to the house and meet with the residents who offer their input. Once accepted into the house, the new resident fills out an agreement form. After his arrival, the resident manager assigns him household duties, and goes over the house rules. Length of stay per client varies and there is no limit. Some of the men have been at Double A Safe House for years.
A resident manager lives on the premises and makes sure that clients follow all the rules. He gives new clients an orientation to the house, then connects with them at least once a week, to make sure that they are doing okay. Additionally, he performs random drug and alcohol screenings, and reports any suspicious activity to the program director. Residents who are honest about having relapsed are given 48 hours evacuation time. Those who are caught sneaking in drugs or alcohol, or don’t tell the house manager that they have relapsed, are dismissed from the property immediately. The curfew is at 1 am but possible exceptions include working a graveyard shift, special events and emergencies. Those exemptions must be cleared ahead of time with the resident manager.
The men must perform regular household chores, attend a minimum of three weekly off-site 12-step meetings, attend the house meeting, and find a sponsor within 30 days of residency. Additionally, residents must be gainfully employed or actively looking for work. Disabled clients must have a daily routine that gets them out of the house and includes healthy, recovery-oriented activities. The 30-day cost for a double-occupancy room is $300, plus a one-time key deposit fee of $10. The 30-day cost for a single room starts at $325. There is usually a waiting list for private rooms.
Extras
The forthcoming Transitions Addiction Treatment facility will be opening in the near future. The rehab will include a six-week Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), individual therapy and substance abuse assessments for court-ordered clients. Those who reside at the Double A Safe House will be eligible for discounted services.
In Summary
This is an intimate sober living for men who are serious about recovery. What’s unique about this house is that the established residents also play an active role in determining who gets to live there. For clients who are looking for a unique and affordable Midwest sober living house with no rules about the maximum length of stay, this is the perfect match.
